Manchester United have reportedly made a mammoth five-year contract offer to Raphael Varane in hopes of signing him from Real Madrid this summer.
According to a report from Spanish publication ABC, Manchester United have ramped up their pursuit of Real Madrid defensive mainstay Raphael Varane and have offered him a lucrative five-year contract in order to convince him to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.
One of the most accomplished and successful defenders of the modern era, Varane has grown leaps and bounds since joining Real Madrid as a teenager a decade ago. The 28-year-old has won every trophy for the taking with Los Blancos and also went on to lift the 2018 FIFA World Cup with the French national team.
Entering the peak years of his career, Varane has reportedly decided to seek a new challenge in his career, as he enters the final year of his contract, sparking a flurry of interest across Europe, particularly the Premier League, where in the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City are all keen on the central defender.
However, it seems like Manchester United may have pulled ahead of their rivals in pursuit of the 28-year-old as they have now acted to bring a move to fruition by offering him a bumper five-year deal in order to lure him to Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s need for a new centre-back needs no introduction after the way the backline crumbled in the last few games following the injury to club captain Harry Maguire. Both Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly have just not been consistent enough while they have also had to battle with injuries over the past year, or much longer in case of the Ivorian.
With Axel Tuanzebe being linked with a potential exit either on loan or permanently this summer and Phil Jones not part of the plans, it is imperative that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer & co. bring in a new centre-back. To that end, a number of defenders ranging from Villarreal star Pau Torres to Sevilla’s French ace Jules Kounde have been linked, along with Varane.

At the moment though, it seems like Manchester United have zeroed in on Varane as their preferred choice and have offered him a five-year deal to convince him to sign for the club. However, the report does add that the Red Devils are yet to reach an agreement with Real Madrid over a transfer fee for the Frenchman, with Los Blancos unwilling to entertain any offers less than their €70 million valuation.
Varane is currently away on international duty with France for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020. So, there is unlikely to be any major movement until he is done with the tournament. It now remains to be seen if Manchester United’s contract offer is enough to sway him to move to Old Trafford.
