Forgotten Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta has reportedly been offered to Serie A champions Inter Milan ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to an exclusive report from FC Inter News, newly-crowned Serie A champions Inter Milan have been offered an opportunity to sign Chelsea outcast Davide Zappacosta in the upcoming transfer window in a deal worth €7-€8 million.
Zappacosta signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2017 from Serie A club Torino but was never quite able to nail down a regular starting berth for himself at Stamford Bridge. Indeed, the 28-year-old was behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order of things and could manage just 52 appearances across his first two seasons, producing a return of two goals and four assists.
Zappacosta, as a result, was sent out on loan to AS Roma for the 2019/20 campaign where he struggled for game-time and returned to Chelsea last year before leaving for a temporary spell with Genoa. The Italian international has done quite well in the 2020/21 season for his latest temporary club, bagging four goals and two assists in just 25 Serie A appearances.
Now that his loan deal expires, Zappacosta will soon be back at Chelsea, where he will find himself behind Reece James, Azpilicueta, as well as potentially Callum Hudson-Odoi in the order of preference under new manager Thomas Tuchel. And, with his contract set to expire in over a year, the Blues are now actively looking to offload the right-back in the upcoming transfer window.
And, as per the aforementioned report, Zappacosta’s services have been offered to Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri, who won their first Serie A title in eleven years, will be needing reinforcements in the wing-back areas this summer as Ashley Young is out of contract while Ivan Perisic has been put on the transfer list by the club.
But, the biggest blow for Inter Milan is that star performer Achraf Hakimi is set to be sold due to the club’s financial troubles. Interestingly, Chelsea are one of the Moroccan full-back’s many suitors. Nevertheless, with there likely to be a cull of wing-backs heading into the next season, someone like Zappacosta can be a handy option, given his experience in Serie A and his comfort of playing on either flanks.
Add to it, the Italian international would also be quite an economical option for the Serie A champions if the aforementioned value holds true. However, it is said that, as things stand, Inter Milan have different priorities, although a move for Zappacosta is not entirely ruled out. It remains to be seen if the 28-year-old makes his way to San Siro in the summer but a permanent exit from Chelsea seems like a solid possibility.
