Real Madrid have reportedly identified Nicolo Barella as a possible option to bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Nicolo Barella has emerged on the radar of Real Madrid as a possible target to reinforce their midfield unit in the summer transfer window. The defending La Liga champions are hoping to take advantage of Inter Milan’s precarious financial situation to land the 24-year-old Italian international.
Nicolo Barella has gone on to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie A since joining Inter Milan from Cagliari in the summer of 2019. Initially signed on loan, the Nerazzurri chose to make the player’s stay at San Siro permanent and the move has paid off handsomely.
After all, Barella has been one of the protagonists in Inter’s triumphant Serie A campaign, with the 24-year-old Italian international having a haul of 3 goals and 8 assists in 35 league appearances. His progress, though, has attracted one of the biggest clubs in the world, with Real Madrid keen on signing him.
The Merengues have an urgent need to bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window, despite the positive impression that Antonio Blanco has made. Indeed, while Blanco is one for the future, Real Madrid need an immediate solution in midfield, seeing as Luka Modric is in the final phase of his career while Toni Kroos, too, is well into his thirties.
Apart from the creative duo, Zinedine Zidane has the likes of Casemiro, Federico Valverde and Isco at his disposal, with Dani Ceballos and Martin Odegaard set to return from their loan spells at Arsenal. However, there are no guarantees that either Ceballos or Odegaard have a future at Real Madrid, while Isco is likely to be offloaded by Los Blancos.
Therefore, it is imperative that Real Madrid sign a midfield reinforcement in the summer transfer window, which explains the interest in Barella. In fact, the interest comes straight from president Florentino Perez, who has started planning summer moves amid Zidane’s uncertain future at the club.
Apart from Barella, Houssem Aouar, Fabian Ruiz and several others have also been linked, but it looks like Real Madrid could press ahead with their interest in Barella instead. The reigning La Liga champions are also hoping to take advantage of Inter Milan’s precarious financial situation to drive down the 24-year-old’s asking price. An intriguing summer, therefore, beckons Inter, Barella and Real Madrid.
