The Hard Tackle takes a look at three Premier League clubs who could be an ideal destination for Robert Lewandowski, as the Bayern Munich star ponders a move to England.
Bayern Munich’s decision to appoint Julian Nagelsmann as their new head coach has rocked the German footballing scene. The 33-year-old is about to be in charge of some of the world’s most decorated footballers – some of who are even older or slightly younger than the coach himself.
One such player is Robert Lewandowski, who is now facing an uncertain future at Allianz Arena, as per the latest report from SportBild.
It appears the striker is unhappy with the Bayern bosses over their unwillingness to hand him a mega-deal. And it has forced his agent Pini Zahavi to find him a club in the upcoming summer transfer window, with England being particularly favoured as the player’s desired location.
It is hard to blame Nagelsmann’s appointment as the reason for Lewandowski’s uncertain future, as the Pole was always keen on seeking a new challenge elsewhere and rumours were rife even in 2018.
It appears Lewandowski’s desire could become a reality this summer, especially with his current contract expiring 2023, meaning if Bayern are unwilling to hand him a bumper new deal, they will have to part ways with him this summer, in order to avoid selling him for a cut-price.
Here, at The Hard Tackle, we will take a look at three Premier League clubs who should definitely make a move for Robert Lewandowski as the Bayern Munich superstar ponders a move to England this summer.
Liverpool
Liverpool, one would imagine, would be the desired choice for Robert Lewandowski, should he opt to move to the Premier League this summer. It is almost a match made in heaven, as the Bayern Munich star holds Jurgen Klopp in high regard, as the German tactician had played a key role in launching his career at Borussia Dortmund.
Lewandowski, therefore, could be keen on reuniting with Klopp at Anfield. He is already well-accustomed to the Gegenpressing style of play and should settle in nicely, thanks to his vast experience at the highest level of football coupled with his excellent relationship with Klopp.
From a sporting perspective, Lewandowski’s immaculate scoring prowess will make him a definite upgrade over Roberto Firmino, thereby making him a potential solution to the club’s offensive woes. The addition of Lewandowski should also increase the chances of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s prolonged stay at Anfield, as the two would love to provide the service to someone as lethal as the Polish international.
Liverpool, though, may find some problems in affording Lewandowski as the veteran striker is likely to demand a huge pay packet. It could thus come at the expense of the departure of at least one of their star players, so they may have to let go of someone like Firmino or Naby Keita. Nonetheless, the Reds are an ideal destination for Lewandowski, whose quality in front of goal could be a massive help in the club’s bid to catch up with Manchester City after a disastrous 2020/21 campaign.
Manchester United
Manchester United is another club that might make a strong case for Robert Lewandowski in the summer, primarily because of how the club has improved itself over the past year or so. Especially in the ongoing campaign, the Red Devils have emerged as the second-best team in England. They could even challenge Manchester City for the title with just the right adjustment in their squad and that is where Lewandowski comes into the fray.
It is well established that United have a world-class creative unit, led by the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. However, in Anthony Martial, they haven’t found their desired productivity while Edinson Cavani’s contract expires at the end of the season.
The Bayern Munich striker, in that regard, could prove to be an ideal solution to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attacking problems. His hunger for goals coupled with his overall work ethic in the final third as well as the determination and leadership could make him the ideal protagonist of the United attack.
A move to Old Trafford could make sense for the player as well, as Manchester United are indeed one of the biggest clubs in the market. It would thus help him boost his stock significantly and gain traction outside of Europe. Given his record at Bayern Munich, Lewandowski should also find no problems in earning his desired wages, although Man United’s pursuit of the Pole could largely depend on the club’s luck in offloading unwanted players this summer.
Manchester City
It was always going to be a difficult choice between Manchester City and Chelsea, at the end, we had to give City the advantage due to a couple of key factors, with one of them being the one and only Pep Guardiola. The Catalan tactician had played a key role in kickstarting Lewandowski’s career at Bayern Munich and helped him reach new heights following his move from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2014.
The Pole, in fact, netted a total of 67 goals in just 100 competitive matches under the leadership of Guardiola, 30 of which came in the 2015/16 Bundesliga league campaign – a career-high record at the time, and a record that played a vital role in helping Bayern Munich nudge ahead of Borussia Dortmund for the league title.
Lewandowski, therefore, will not be averse to a reunion with the now Manchester City manager at Etihad next season. Another key factor that gave Man City the upper hand is that, unlike Chelsea, the Sky Blues are going through a transition in their number nine position and with Sergio Aguero leaving the club after the end of the season, they are in desperate need of a new forward.
Erling Haaland has emerged as the priority target for Pep Guardiola. But in Lewandowski, the Catalan will find himself a seasoned veteran who is well familiar with his Juego de posicion style of play and could thrive in the Premier League, especially with the creative support of players like Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan – his former teammate at Borussia Dortmund.

Manchester City are already on the ascendancy and are huge favourites to lift the UEFA Champions League this season while they are also unlikely to have any problems in affording the player, especially with UEFA tuning out with FFP restrictions. It should all work in favour of Guardiola and indeed Lewandowski, who would love to win more silverware upon his potential new adventure in England.
