Liverpool have reportedly set their sights on Kalvin Phillips over a move in the summer transfer window, with Jurgen Klopp a keen admirer.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Kalvin Phillips is the subject of interest from Liverpool over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights’ manager, Jurgen Klopp is a huge admirer of the 25-year-old Leeds United midfielder’s talents and is keen on sanctioning a transfer.
Kalvin Phillips is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders on show in the Premier League this season, having taken no time to get settled in the competition following Leeds United’s promotion from the Championship. Such has been his impact that the 25-year-old has managed to establish a foothold in the English national side as well over the course of the season.
As for his time at club level, Phillips has turned out 206 times for the Whites, even chipping in with 12 goals and as many assists. And, his exploits have duly been noted by one of the biggest clubs in England, with Premier League champions Liverpool showing an interest in the player.
Liverpool are set to enter a period of transition following their struggles in defending their Premier League crown this season. Midfield is one department that is certain to be reinforced this summer, with Georginio Wijnaldum reportedly intent on joining Barcelona.
As a result, Liverpool are being forced to dip their toes in the transfer market for a midfielder, with several options, including Fabian Ruiz, identified as possible options to replace Wijnaldum. And, Phillips could be one such option as well, even though he largely operates at the base of the midfield instead of reprising a box-to-box role.
Phillips’s possible arrival, though, could enable Liverpool to play with a little more dynamism, with the 25-year-old midfielder offering some deep-lying playmaking. The report suggests that the Reds are keen on launching a move for the Englishman, with Jurgen Klopp an admirer of his qualities.
Having said that, Phillips is one of the key players in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad at Leeds and the Whites could well be determined to keep hold of their star midfielder. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool can turn Phillips’ head, or if they are forced to set their sights elsewhere in order to bolster their midfield.
