SL Benfica’s 20-year-old left-back Nuno Tavares has reportedly popped up on the radar of Manchester United, who are yet to make a move for him.
As reported by talkSPORT, Nuno Tavares is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Premier League heavyweights, though, are simply monitoring his progress for now and do not have any intentions to make a move for the 20-year-old left-back, as things stand.
Nuno Tavares joined Benfica in 2015 and subsequently made giant strides within the youth setup of the Portuguese club before breaking into their first-team setup at the onset of the 2019/20 season. Since then, he has made slow progress within the senior squad and is yet to cement his place as the first-choice left-back.
So far, the 20-year-old has turned out 33 times for Benfica, with 1 goals and 7 assists to show for his efforts. Despite not being a mainstay for the Eagles’ just yet, the youngster seems to have impressed several scouts, with Manchester United among the clubs having their sights set on him.
The interest from the English giants, though, comes as a bit of a surprise, considering they only signed Alex Telles last summer. While the Brazilian international is yet to set the stage alight at Old Trafford, his arrival seems to have kept Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s hands full as far as left-back options are concerned.
Indeed, Brandon Williams has become a peripheral figure while Luke Shaw seems to be enjoying a fine renaissance this season since Telles’s move to Manchester United. And so, it is hard to see how another left-back would fit in at Manchester United.
Having said that, the report does add that the Red Devils are simply keeping tabs on Tavares, quoting football agent Cesar Boaventura’s comments on Radio Marte: “This player can play for any club in Europe. But right now he can’t. He has to learn and grow. Right now I don’t think Manchester United want to take him. Nor that Benfica want to sell him in January.”
Manchester United indeed look set for a relatively quiet January transfer window, with Amad Diallo likely to be the only player to arrive at Old Trafford this month. Meanwhile, it is also suggested in the talkSPORT report that AS Roma and Napoli are also interested in signing Tavares. As far as Manchester United are concerned, a January move for the 20-year-old is unlikely.
