Transfer News: Liverpool rule out Sergio Ramos move

Liverpool have reportedly ruled out the possibility of snapping up Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos on a free transfer in the summer.

As reported by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool have distanced themselves from rumours linking them with Sergio Ramos over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Real Madrid captain faces an uncertain future at the Spanish club, with his contract running out at the end of the season.

Ramos has enjoyed an extraordinary career at Real Madrid since arriving from Sevilla in the summer of 2005. In the last decade and a half, very few defenders have matched up to the levels of the Spaniard, especially since he shifted from a right-back to a centre-back for good.

Over the course of his stint with Real Madrid, Ramos has won every trophy he has competed for multiple times over while amassing nearly 700 appearances for the club. While it is certain that he will go down as one of the best to don the white of Los Blancos, his future in the Spanish capital is uncertain, which has, in turn, given way to rumours of a shock Bosman move to Liverpool.

Liverpool struck gold when they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton three years ago, with the Dutchman completely galvanizing their defence. However, due to injuries suffered by Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, he has not been able to play with one centre-back consistently.

With van Dijk currently out with a long-term injury himself, Liverpool have been reportedly to be in the market for a centre-back this month. The reported interest in Ramos, though, has centered over a possible move to swoop him away from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

Now, though, it has been suggested that Liverpool have ruled out a move for the Real Madrid captain due to what had transpired in the 2018 UEFA Champions League final, wherein he was involved in an incident that ended with a shoulder injury for Mohamed Salah.

So, in order to avoid creating a fractious atmosphere in the dressing room, Liverpool are moving away from the prospect of signing Ramos. The veteran Spaniard, though, is linked with a number of other top clubs across Europe, with Manchester United reportedly among those keen on snapping him up if and when his Real Madrid contract ends.

Real Madrid, on their part, seem to be laying down the succession plan for Ramos, with Jules Kounde eyed as a possible replacement. As for the links with Liverpool, the 34-year-old is unlikely to make his way to Anfield on a Bosman move this summer.
