Manchester United might reportedly be forced to accept a cut-price £50 million transfer fee for Paul Pogba in the summer transfer window.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Manchester United could be forced to slash their valuation of Paul Pogba come the summer transfer window. The Premier League heavyweights might have to accept a bid in the region of £50 million, with the Frenchman set to enter the final year of his deal with them in the summer.
Pogba joined Manchester United from Juventus in the summer of 2016 and enjoyed a spectacular maiden campaign in his second coming at Old Trafford. However, since then, the 26-year-old has gone through a rollercoaster of a ride at the club, clashing with former manager Jose Mourinho, showing inconsistency in his performances and having an unfortunate tryst with injuries.
The fitness issue, in particular, has reared its ugly head this season, with Pogba struggling with recurring ankle injuries. As a result, he has managed just nine appearances for Manchester United so far in the current campaign, racking up a mere 71 minutes of action since September.
To make matters worse, constant comments by Pogba’s infamous agent Mino Raiola pertaining to Manchester United and the French international have only created an atmosphere of tension amid rising uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.
Pogba is set to enter the final year of his contract with Manchester United this summer. While the Red Devils do reportedly have the option to extend his deal by a further 12 months, there is a feeling at the club that it is prudent to allow Pogba to leave at the end of the season.
There had been earlier claims that Manchester United would want to recoup at least the sum that they paid to sign Pogba four years ago. However, it now looks as if his valuation has plummeted drastically, with the report suggesting that they may be forced to accept just £50 million for him.
This figure is a rather paltry value for a player of Pogba’s pedigree, although considering the length that remains on his contract, the price might be fair. The £50 million figure is a huge plunge on the values that were quoted last summer, as Real Madrid had been willing to offer close to £150 million for the 26-year-old.
Now, though, with Pogba eager to depart Manchester United, as per the words of Raiola, a cut-price fee looks to be in the offing. Real Madrid and Juventus remain prospective clubs, according to Daily Mail, but neither club seems to be serious interested as of now.
For now, it is clear that Manchester United will have to cut their losses should they sell the 2018 World Cup winner in the summer. It will, however, be interesting to see what the future holds for Pogba as uncertainty continues to mount on his Old Trafford future.
