PSG are reportedly targeting a hijack of Real Madrid’s summer pursuit of Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen, who is set to exit the Premier League club.
According to a report by Daily Mail, PSG are looking to steal a march on Real Madrid for Christian Eriksen over a free transfer in next summer’s transfer window. The Danish midfielder is set to run his contract out at Tottenham and can begin to talk with foreign clubs regaring a pre-contract agreement in January.
Christian Eriksen has enjoyed a fine six-year stint at Tottenham, wherein he has played an integral role in Spurs’ transformation into regular members of the top four and contenders for the Premier League title. But, his time at the North London club is reaching its end, with the Dane in the final year of his deal with them.
Tottenham have reportedly tabled a number of contract offers for Eriksen, but have failed to tie him down to a new contract. As a result, the Premier League heavyweights are reportedly ready to offer a cut-price deal to suitors in the January transfer window. But, a free transfer in the summer is more appealing, and has attracted Real Madrid and PSG.
Real Madrid have been linked with Eriksen since the summer transfer window, when they were on the hunt for midfield reinforcements amid a squad overhaul. But, eventually, Los Blancos chose not to bolster their midfield options, with Zinedine Zidane keeping faith in the options at his disposal for the ongoing season.
However, with Luka Modric in the twilight of his career, a succession plan needs to be laid down for the Croat. As a result, Eriksen is a viable target for Real Madrid to pursue, although he is not the only target to boost Zidane’s midfield options. The Merengues, meanwhile, are also facing stiff competition from PSG for the playmaker.
Thomas Tuchel has a crowded midfield unit at his disposal following the addition of Ander Herrera and Idrissa Gueye in the summer. But, the report suggests that the French champions are planning a clearout of sorts next summer, with Leandro Paredes and Julian Draxler facing the axe.
In such a scenario, PSG are looking at Eriksen to be a cost-effective replacement for the duo, thereby bolstering Tuchel’s creative options. To that end, Les Parisiens are now plotting a hijack of Real Madrid’s pursuit of the Tottenham superstar, thus setting up a head-to-head battle between two European powerhouses.
With Eriksen out of contract at the Premier League club next summer, he will be eligible for pre-contract discussions with foreign clubs. For now, what appears to be clear is that the race to sign the 27-year-old is heating up, and it remains to be seen if PSG can steal a march on Real Madrid for him.
