Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged midfield superstar Paul Pogba to prove his ‘world class talent’ and take more responsibility.
Speaking at the Off The Ball roadshow, Gary Neville has challenged Paul Pogba to prove that he is the best player in the world. The Manchester United legend has coaxed the oft-criticised midfielder to take more responsibility and step up as the Red Devils’ talisman.
Pogba’s time at Manchester United has been a mixed bag, with plenty of highs littered with quite a few lows as well. But, there is no denying the fact that he has been United’s best player over the course of his three-year stay at Old Trafford since returning from Juventus in the summer of 2016.
However, this past summer window saw Pogba’s future being mired in uncertainty following the player’s comments that he wanted a new challenge this season. While he was subsequently linked with Real Madrid right until the very last day of the European window, the Frenchman ended up staying put at Manchester United.
Now looking likely to spend his fourth full season with the Manchester United first-team setup, Pogba will be looked upon to not just be the creative force for the team but also for inspiration in the grimmest of situations. And, Manchester United legend Gary Neville has urged the midfielder to start taking more responsibilties.
“Paul Pogba is now the obsession, because he’s the biggest player at the biggest club. He’s a World Cup winner and it should be a compliment that people are talking about it. The best player, the leader, the captain in the team, will stand up and he will take the brunt of the criticism. Just as the manager will and the coach will.”
“So when people criticise him or put the pressure on him or apply the pressure to him, it’s because he’s the best, he’s the shining light. He’s the Bryan Robson of the 80’s now. United were in trouble, people hung everything on Bryan Robson, everybody now hangs a lot on Paul Pogba. But that’s the pressure that he wants, he wants to be the best player in the world. So now go and show us you’re the best player in the world.”
Pogba has come in for criticism from Neville on a number of occasions, especially following games that Manchester United struggle to impose themselves in. It will now be upon the French midfielder to take the United legend’s words in his stride and assume the mantle of being his team’s talisman with elan.
With his Real Madrid dream not achieved just yet, it focusing on performing well this season for Manchester United would bode well for him on a personal level while also going some way in addressing the club’s midfield woes in the grand scheme of things.
