Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has insisted Arsenal are gunning for the title and not merely a top four finish this season.
Arsenal might have got off to a flying start in the Premier League after two wins from two games, but they still have a long way to go before being considered serious contenders for anything. In an interview with Canal+, as carried out by The Sun, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has insisted that Arsenal are in to fight for the title and not merely achieve a top four place this season.
After securing two hard-fought victories against Newcastle United and Burnley, Arsenal are sitting nicely in second place on the table. A top-of-the-table clash with Liverpool awaits them this coming weekend, as the Gunners head to Anfield with a newfound optimism. However, while their early form has been impressive, Unai Emery has remained grounded in terms of his team’s objectives.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang though, was not so grounded when asked about the club’s ambitions and targets for the current season. The Gabonese striker maintained that making it into the top four remains a priority, although the Gunners, fueled by their latest signings, can challenge for the title this season.
In his interview with Canal+, he said, “I think as I said earlier, we have made good signings, that will help us. “Last season, we were not far away from qualifying for the Champions’ League.”
“Whatever happens, that is the most important thing, the most important aim for us. To be back in the Champions League. Aside from that, to fight for the title, we know very well that the big guns are ready, but we are also ready, and in any case, we are going to give our all to match the big guns if possible.”
Aubameyang also continued his budding partnership with French striker Alexandre Lacazette as both forwards scored to secure three points against Burnley. However, the exciting prospect for Arsenal is the overall performance of their squad, including those of new signings Nicolas Pepe, David Luiz and Dani Ceballos.
Aubameyang was briefly linked with a move to Manchester United in the summer, but those links turned out to be just rumours. The Gabonese international was previously Arsenal’s record signing when he moved from Borussia Dortmund in the January window of 2018. Last season, the striker collected the Golden Boot, sharing it with Liverpool duo Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.
Having started the 2019-20 season strongly as well, it looks like Aubameyang wants to go a step further from claiming just an individual award. The star striker seems to be hungry for collective glory as well, and is eyeing the Premier League title. Whether the Gunners can win it, remains to be seen.
