Wayne Rooney keen on returning to Manchester United as coach after retirement

Wayne Rooney is reportedly eyeing a return to Manchester United in the future, this time as a coach once he has called time on his playing career.

If an exclusive report by The Sun is to be believed, Wayne Rooney could be set for a return to one of his former clubs in the future. The English striker is keen on making a return to Manchester United after his retirement, as he wishes to be a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff.

Wayne Rooney enjoyed a legendary time as a Manchester United player, spending thirteen illustrious years at Old Trafford. During this period, the Englishman went on to become the Red Devils’ all-time leading goalscorer, scoring a staggering 253 goals in addition to providing 146 assists.

The 33-year-old is also the record scorer for England, having found the back of the net 53 times for his national side, in a career that came to an end last year. Since calling time on his stint with Manchester United, Rooney has gone on to spend a year with boyhood club Everton before joining Major League Soccer outfit DC United.

In Washington, Rooney seems to have found a new lease of life, having been appointed as the club captain by DC United. In 46 appearances for the MLS side, the former Manchester United superstar has a solid return of 25 goals and 13 assists.

Rooney though, already seems to be planning for life after retirement, when he wishes to remain a part of the game. And, in this post-playing career, the 33-year-old wishes to return to Manchester United, this time in a coaching capacity to be a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff.

Solskjaer was appointed as the permanent Manchester United boss earlier this year and has since gone about creating a squad in his mould. As for Rooney, it is hardly surprising that he is interested in a coaching career post retirement, with the veteran striker reportedly working on receiving his coaching badges for some time now.

However, the report from The Sun also adds that the Englishman is in no rush to call time on his playing career just yet. Rooney’s current contract with DC United runs till the end of 2020 and he is likely to play at least till the end of his deal with the MLS club.

When he is done playing football though, it will be interesting to see where his career takes him. Manchester United fans would certainly be excited at the prospect of having Wayne Rooney back at Old Trafford, albeit in a coaching capacity.
