David de Gea poised to sign bumper new deal with Manchester United

Manchester United are reportedly confident that contract rebel David de Gea will sign a bumper new £350,000-a-week five-year deal.

According to an exclusive report by The Sun, David de Gea looks set to bring an end to his contract impasse with Manchester United. The Premier League heavyweights are destined to tie the Spanish goalkeeper down to a new five-year deal worth £350,000 per week.

David de Gea is already a modern day stalwart for Manchester United, having been arguably their most important over the last half-a-decade, if not longer. The 2018-19 season was certainly sub-par for the Spaniard, whose 2018 FIFA World Cup hangover continued into the club campaign as well.

But, despite making a number of high profile errors this past season, de Gea remains a revered figure at Manchester United, who have been desperate to keep hold of the 28-year-old as he gets set to enter the final year of his contract at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been in talks with the player and his entourage for well over a year now. But, there has hardly been any breakthrough, with the two parties disagreeing over wages, meaning there has been an impasse between Manchester United and de Gea.

The Spanish international’s entourage have been adamant that they would only agree to fresh terms if he was offered wages on the same scale as the club’s top earner, Alexis Sanchez, who pockets around £505,000 every week. The demands did make some sense considering his stature at Old Trafford.

But, Manchester United had been unwilling to match those demands, having only tabled a deal worth £300,000-a-week upon the turn of the year. With his future getting increasingly uncertain, the Premier League heavyweights started identifying potential replacement options, with Andre Onana reportedly being one of the targets.

However, their priority has understandably been to reach agreement with de Gea over a new deal. And, a breakthrough seems to have been reached, with The Sun suggesting that Manchester United are set to tie de Gea down to a £350,000-a-week contract, a significant drop on his aforementioned demands.

The 28-year-old will sign a four-year deal that will have an option of an additional year, which can be triggered by United, as is their tradition. But, de Gea is also treading with caution as he will only put pen to paper if he is convinced by the Red Devils’ summer business.

The news though, certainly comes as a huge boost. And, if it turns out to be true, it will be interesting to see if de Gea indeed pens a £350,000-a-week contract with Manchester United to continue his illustrious time at Old Trafford.
