Premier League giants Tottenham are reportedly set to enter contract talks with Christian Eriksen, who is heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid
According to a report by Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, Premier League giants Tottenham have offered a bumper new deal to Christian Eriksen. The fresh contract will take the Danish playmaker, who is the subject of interest from Real Madrid, in the same pay bracket as Spurs talisman Harry Kane.
Eriksen has blossomed into one of the best playmakers, not just in the Premier League but across Europe, since joining Tottenham from Ajax in the summer of 2013. A key figure in Spurs’ transformation in recent years, the player has also attracted the who’s who of European football with his exploits.
In particular, Real Madrid have been keen on securing his services for quite some time now. Los Blancos had even been pondering a move to swoop Eriksen away from Premier League football in the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialise. Now though, the need to land the Spurs superstar has arisen again.
Luka Modric continues to face an uncertain future at the Bernabeu amid Inter Milan’s relentless pursuit of the Croat in recent months. Additionally, with the World Cup finalist also in the twilight of his career, Real Madrid need to draw up a succession plan anyway.
Mateo Kovacic was believed to be the worthy successor to Modric in the Real Madrid midfield. But, with the Croatian midfielder enjoying life at Chelsea, there are rumours that he could push to remain in the Premier League and join the Blues permanently. Eriksen is thus, a viable target for the European champions.
But, Tottenham are understandably unwilling to part ways with the Danish international. In a period wherein the likes of Harry Kane and Mauricio Pochettino have also rebuffed the advances of Real Madrid to stay put with the Premier League giants, tying Eriksen down to a new deal is imperative as well.
Spurs have already tabled a contract offer to the 26-year-old, and should he sign it, Eriksen will be one of the North Londoners’ among the top earners. But, with his current deal running out in a little over 18 months, there is a belief at Real Madrid that if he stalls on the aforementioned offer, they will stand a good chance of snapping him up.
Real Madrid can undeniably match the terms that Tottenham would have offered, if not better them. So, the player’s preference will influence the final decision, as while he can end up becoming one of the all-time Premier League greats if he remains with Spurs for years to come, Real Madrid will offer a better chance to compete for trophies.
It now remains to be seen if Eriksen ends up staying put at Tottenham by committing his long-term future to them, or if Real Madrid end up swooping him away instead.
