In spite of many big-name managers been linked with the Emirates job, Paul Merson feels Brendan Rodgers should be the man to replace Arsene Wenger.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Arsenal legend Paul Merson has urged the club to replace Arsene Wenger with former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. Paul Merson, while on his footballing duties with Sky Sports, has been vocal about Arsenal’s failures, but his suggestion for Arsene Wenger’s replacement will not be getting the fans excited.
Arsenal’s bad run of form in 2018 has seen the Emirates stadium half-empty during recent games against Manchester City and Watford, as fans have seemingly lost interest in their side’s Premier League campaign. Arsenal having lost many games in 2018 alone has ensured their incompetence to vie for top-four let alone the Premier League title.
Much of the blame has been laid on manager Arsene Wenger’s shoulders, and since February, calls for replacing the Frenchman have been doing the rounds. Paul Merson, an Arsenal legend has stated his views and suggested an unlikely candidate for the job. The footballer-turned-pundit feels Brendan Rodgers should be the man to do so.
While speaking to Sky Sports, Merson suggested,”He fits Arsenal great, the nearest Liverpool have ever come to winning the league for a long, long time is when Brendan Rodgers was in charge.”
While Rodgers’ is currently in charge of Scottish Premiership giants Celtic, Merson feels that the Northern Irishman managing in a different league should not be considered a problem when appointing him as Arsenal’s manager.

He said, ” He’s done nothing wrong at Celtic. To do what they’ve done, people can say it’s Scottish football, and Celtic are head and shoulders above, but every team they played on that run treated it like a cup final, which is difficult sometimes.”
Brendan Rodgers had managed Swansea and Liverpool in the Premier League before he took the Celtic job. Rodgers will be fondly remembered for the title chase with Liverpool in the 2013/14 season, with the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling firing on all cylinders as the Reds almost clinched the title, which Manchester City won in the end.
In the wake of many big-name managerial candidates linked with the Emirates job, Brendan Rodgers has been linked too. Other names such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira as well as Germany National team Manager Joachim Low have also been strongly linked with the position.
But the question remains, will Brendan Rodgers be a successful replacement for Arsene Wenger? The even more significant issue in the whole saga is whether Arsene Wenger will step down at the end of the season?
