Manchester United are reportedly set to plot a shock move to sign Sergio Aguero from Manchester City in the summer
According to a report in The Sun, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is plotting a shock raid on neigbours Manchester City to bring Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero to Old Trafford in the summer transfer window.
Aguero has firmly established himself as one of the finest strikers in the world during his time with Manchester City. Possessing a dangerous eye for goal, the Argentine has been the Citizens’ talisman, and it is not surprising that his time in England has coincided with City’s rise as a dominant force in the Premier League.
His record for City speaks for itself, with Aguero finding the back of the net 167 times in 250 matches across all competitions, while also providing 49 assists – a direct contribution every 85 minutes. And his scoring rate of 110 minutes per goal is the best in the Premier League among players who have netted at least 100 goals.
Even in a season when he has struggled at times, Aguero has still managed to boast a return that very few forwards in the world can, having scored 31 goals in 42 appearances in the current campaign. However, the advent of Gabriel Jesus threatens to force the 28-year-old into sharing game time.
That is a prospect that Aguero does not like, as per the report, and there are fears that he could soon be surplus to requirements at City. If that were to be the case, then he will have no dearth of suitors tempting him to make a move away from the Etihad Stadium in the summer.
Manchester United, shockingly, are one such club that is planning a summer swoop for Aguero, with the Red Devils in serious need to recruit a top quality striker in the summer. That is because Zlatan Ibrahimovic is reportedly sidelined for the remainder of 2017 and is unlikely to play again for the club.
That leaves Mourinho with just Marcus Rashford as his recognised option to be the focal point of his side’s attack. And in a side that has been short on goals all through the current campaign, the need to sign a prolific player – or two – just can’t be stressed enough.
Aguero’s acquisition can solve that problem to a great extent, as he is a proven goalscorer in the English top flight, and is at the peak of his powers. The only stumbling block – a big one at that – is that City are likely to be unwilling to sell Aguero to their bitter rivals, and understandably so.
Mourinho, though, is set to test City’s resolve in the summer by tabling a £55 million bid for his target man. It will be interesting to see if the shock move indeed takes place in the summer, but with Aguero wishing to remain in Manchester, there is a slight chance that transfer will see the day of the light.
