Chelsea are set to make a summer move for Forentina star Federico Bernardeschi, according to reports.
According to CalcioMercato, Fiorentina are planning to offer Bernardeschi a new deal soon but that will not deter Chelsea from making an approach for Bernardeschi in the summer. The Italian international has been on Chelsea’s radar for some time now after impressing with the Viola.
Bernardeschi was at one point co-owned by Fiorentina and Crotone. However, in June 2014 Fiorentina purchased Crotone’s half back from the Pitagorici and Bernardeschi was immediately introduced to the first team. The 22-year old has since gone on to become on of their key players and was called up to the Italian national team last year.
This season, Bernardeschi has 11 goals and 4 assists in 29 appearances and has been attracting interest from the likes of Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. It is no surprise Fiorentina want to offer him a new contract given that he is being linked with some of the biggest clubs across Europe.
However, Calciomercato claim that the new contract doesn’t necessarily mean Fiorentina will refuse to sell the player. The new contract is likely to have a release clause that will ensure Fiorentina make a princely sum on the Italian international.
Chelsea have been constantly linked with the winger over the past few months, with the Blues even said to have been planning a €45 million swoop for the Italian in January. However, Chelsea did not follow up on their interest and Bernardeschi stayed at Fiorentina.
It was also reported that AC Milan were rivaling Chelsea for Bernardeschi with the Rossoneri looking to rebuild their side with the new funds available from Sino Sports group. Given Bernardeschi’s performances this season, it won’t be a surprise to see them renew their interest in the summer as well.
Antonio Conte will know Bernardeschi well from his time as manager of Juventus and the 22-year old perfectly fits his profile of players. Fast, strong and technically gifted, Bernardeschi can operate anywhere across the front-line and has even played as a wing-back on occasion.
Given Chelsea’s 3-4-3 formation and Bernardeschi’s versatility, this is sure to be a huge factor in Conte pursuing the youngster. Regardless of Bernardeschi signing a new contract, it won’t be surprising to see Chelsea make a significant bid for him in the summer.
