Serie A side Roma are interested in bringing Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas to the Stadio Olimpico in January
Fabregas has found minutes difficult to come by this season since the arrival of Antonio Conte and his introduction of the 3-4-3 formation. The Italian has chosen to go with a resurgent Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante in the center of midfield due to their defensive solidity, thereby restricting the former Barcelona man to only 9 appearances, mostly from the bench and the injuries he has suffered this season haven’t helped his cause either.
Needless to say, he has constantly been linked with a move away in January in search for more game time.
According to Italian publication Il Tempo, the Spaniard has now been courting interest from Serie A giants Roma. The report states that they will take on fierce rivals AC Milan, who were also rumoured to be interested in the 29-year-old. However, the delay in the Rossonerri’s takeover means that they will likely keep all major transfer business on hold for the near future.
Luciano’s Spalletti’s side have had a good season so far, and are currently 7 points behind league leaders Juventus, with a game in hand. Fabregas would add a considerable amount of quality to their squad and Spalletti would have a world class creative outlet to add to his midfield.
Also, it has been rumoured that Radja Nainggolan, who was a Chelsea target in the summer, is unhappy at the club and hasn’t agreed a new contract. Should Chelsea reignite their interest, Roma may force Chelsea to consider a swap deal.

However, it is unlikely that Roma would wish to take Fabregas on a permanent basis in the January transfer window, with a loan move seeming more likely. But with Fabregas’s influence slowly growing in the Chelsea team, Conte wouldn’t want to let his most creative player leave in the middle of the season.
His introduction helped Chelsea change the game against West Brom last week and against Manchester City, he set up the goal for Diego Costa’s equalizer and had a superb game throughout.
These kind of performances make it clear that Fabregas adds something to this Chelsea team that Conte can’t incorporate into his starting XI and he is vital to their title chances. Conte has stated in previous press conferences that the World Cup winner won’t be allowed to leave in January and it is likely that Conte and Chelsea will hold on to Fabregas in January.
