Chelsea defender David Luiz believes they must stay ‘awake’ if they want to win title

David Luiz believes Chelsea will have a chance of winning the Premier League title if they can stay “awake” for the rest of the season

Antonio Conte’s men sit just one point behind league leaders Manchester City, who are tied with Arsenal and Liverpool on 23 points, after goals from Eden Hazard and Diego Costa secured a 2-0 win for Chelsea over Southampton on Sunday. Luiz was singled out for praise after the game, with many crediting his performance as integral to keeping a clean sheet.

The clean sheet helped Chelsea to a fourth successive league win – and Chelsea’s fourth game without conceding a goal – which has helped the Blues keep the pace with the early title contenders.

Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, the Brazilian centre back said that in order to continue this run of form, the Blues needed to ‘stay awake’ throughout the season :

“The Premier League is never easy and if you sleep here one minute you start to lose, and then you can lose one, two or three matches. You need to be awake all the time.” he told Chelseafc.com

While the early signs are encouraging for Antonio Conte’s side, Luiz was also quick to stress that there was a long way to go in the season, and that it was too early to predict if Chelsea could mount a realistic title challenge, saying :

“It will be like this until the end. It’s just the beginning. We need to keep our feet on the floor and keep working hard with humility, just this.

“We know the Premier League is not easy. When you start the game nobody knows who will win, but we are trying our best every single match to improve our level.

The Brazilian only rejoined Chelsea this summer, in a reported £34m deal from French giants Paris St.Germain. Luiz hasn’t had the best start, but will be hoping for more performances like this to keep his club in the running for the title.
