Chelsea’s most successful manager returns to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, albeit as a Red Devil.
Blues legend Frank Lampard was one of the most important players during Jose Mourinho’s hugely successful first stint as Chelsea manager. The Portuguese manager even named him as one of the ‘untouchables’ in his team.
The Englishman was questioned about the significance of Sunday’s game between Manchester United and Chelsea. Lampard currently plays for New York City FC, but stated that he was looking forward to the big game.
“Jose Mourinho’s a winner,” Lampard told Sky Sports.
“I’ve worked with him and against him and he wants to win games, none more so than when it’s a big competitive game like this.
“He’ll be very aware of the history and I’m sure he’s still got a huge feeling for Chelsea from his time at the club. On the other hand he’ll be working hard on his team to get them organised to get the right result at Stamford Bridge.”
The former England international added that the return of his former manager to their former club added a new dimension to the game.
“There’ll be an added dimension with Jose Mourinho going back so it’s a huge game. It will be even bigger with the extra ingredients the game has now.”
Chelsea have arrested a rut that saw them lost two in a row to Liverpool and Arsenal with victories against Hull City and Leicester City. They are currently in fifth place in the Premier League table, only three points from the top.
Manchester United, on the other hand, have fallen behind after a good start. Just one win in five Premier League games leaves them in seventh position and in desperate need of victory.
It will be interesting to see how the Chelsea faithful greet Jose Mourinho on his return to Stamford Bridge. They were distraught at him joining their bitter rivals, and there could be some fireworks in store for the Portuguese in London.
