Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Erik Lamela has emerged as a possible target for Italian giants AC Milan.
The AC Milan duo comprising of CEO Marco Fassone and Director of Sport Massimo Mirabelli were in London on business and according to Calciomercatoweb, they wanted to use this trip to the English capital to try and ‘open doors’ for some potential transfer prospects. They weren’t reported to have any meetings or talks scheduled with players and the trip is likely to be for scouting any future targets.
One of the players they have their eye on is Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela. The Argentine maverick was rumoured to be a target of local rivals Inter Milan in the summer. Lamela is one of Milan’s young targets currently plying their trade in London along with Oscar and Michy Batshuayi of Chelsea. However, the Rossonerri think that he would be perfect for the 4-3-3 formation they wish to implement and would easily fit into the left side of Vicenzo Montella’s attacking lineup. They are willing to offer €25 million for him.
Only 24 years of age, Lamela’s potential is undoubted and he has time on his side to become the top player he was once expected to be. After two stellar years with AS Roma where he burst onto the European scene, Tottenham Hotspur came calling and purchased him for a reported £25 million, making him the most expensive player in the club’s history. However, things haven’t gone too well for Lamela since moving to White Hart Lane in 2013.
The Argentine enjoyed his best individual season under Mauricio Pochettino last term as Spurs put up their strongest title challenge in the Premier League era, before eventually imploding toward the end of the season to finish third. In 44 appearances last term, he scored 11 goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions and it seemed as if Pochettino was finally able to get the best out of the former River Place man after 2 years.
But with the emergence of Delle Alli, Son Heung-min’s stellar displays this season and the arrival of Victor Janssen and Moussa Sissoko during the summer has vastly increased the amount of quality in the squad as well as the competition. Though it has been reported that Spurs will not let the Argentine go in January, an offer of that size may force the Londoners into cutting their losses in the summer transfer window and the fact that they could use the money to fund a move for Real Madrid’s Isco, is another factor worth considering.
