Chelsea winger Marko Marin has reportedly joined Olympiacos on a permanent basis, bringing an end to his tenure as a Blues player.
German publication Sport1 have run an exclusive on Monday, reporting that Chelsea have moved Marko Marin off their books with the player joining Greek side Olympiacos on a permanent basis. The report added that the transfer fee involved in bringing the player to Greece is around €3m, with the player signing a three-year contract with the Greek heavyweights.
Marko Marin joined Chelsea at the end of the 2011-12 season, but failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge, making only 6 Premier League appearances for the club. He spent almost the entirety of the last three years on loan to Sevilla, Fiorentina, Anderlecht and lastly Trabzonspor, in order.
The 27-year-old made 24 appearances for Trabzonspor last season in the Super Lig in Turkey, registering 2 goals and 4 assists to his name (stats via whoscored). Chelsea have a new manager in Antonio Conte, but the managerial change should not change the prospects of a first-team role for Marin, who earlier admitted to Kicker that his future lies elsewhere.
The 27-year-old would be relieved to have finally secured a permanent transfer away from Chelsea and would hope to emulate some of his form from his days at Werder Bremen that sealed him a transfer to Chelsea in the first place. The player seemed happy at securing a transfer and told Sport1,“I am happy to sign for a big club with a lot of tradition in which I can play internationally. It is also nice to sign a permanent deal on a three-year contract.”
Olympiacos won the Greek Superleague last season which made it six league trophies in a row and 18 of the last 20 titles for the club, who are the most successful team in the history of the league. The club has qualified for the Champions League, which would provide Marko Marin with another platform to showcase his talent. The German would now be eager to prove to his doubters that he is still capable of putting in great performances on a consistent basis.
Olympiacos would be delighted to have captured Marko Marin who would serve as a replacement for Jimmy Durmaz, who left the club for Ligue 1 side Toulouse. The transfer of Marin could prove to be a good piece of business for Olympiacos, as it provides the club with a player who has the experience of playing at the highest level of European football, along with the purchase not involving a great amount of money compared to other deals being done in the current transfer market.
