Andreas Christensen briefly discussed his Chelsea future, but insisted that his priority at the moment is to continue playing first team football on a weekly basis.
Danish wonderkid Andreas Christensen has been a revelation in the Bundesliga since joining Borussia Monchengladbach on loan from Chelsea last summer. The 20-year-old has become a key player for Gladbach during the first of his two-year loan spell at the German club. He featured in 31 of Gladbach’s 34 league games and was awarded with the club’s Player of the Year award for the 2015-16 season.
Christensen has been touted as a future superstar and was rightly named the Danish Talent of the Year for 2015. He made his senior international debut for Denmark at the age of 19 and has quickly established himself as one of the brightest young central defenders in Europe.
Borussia Monchengladbach are keen to sign the player on a permanent basis and were reported to have made a club-record bid to make the loan move permanent. The Bundesliga side have seen their first bid of £14.2m rejected by Chelsea as the Blues have no interest in selling the Danish defender.
In his interview with Goal, the 20-year-old reiterated his desire to play for Chelsea but stated that he does not wish to sit on the bench at Stamford Bridge. “The main thing is, to play,” Christensen told Goal.
“That’s the main thing that I want for my future. It is all about playing football and that’s it. [Playing at Chelsea] That is an ambition of mine, to play over there in the first team but right now I am not thinking about the future.”
The former Brondby player asserted that his focus is currently on Monchengladbach and their qualifying matches for the Champions League group stage, and that he wishes to continue developing as a footballer in his second year at the German club.
Christensen is highly regarded at Chelsea and new manager Antonio Conte might just decide to give the central defender a chance in the first-team setup when the player returns to the Bridge at the end of the upcoming season.
