Liverpool Captain Jordan Henderson has stated that there is a huge room for improvement as he regretted the weak loss against Sunderland, saying that the Anfield walkout was no excuse for their poor performance.
Liverpool were cruising at home against relegation threatened Sunderland, thanks to two goals from Roberto Firmino and Adam Lallana. But at the 77th minute, Anfield became the stage of one of the biggest modern day protests, as more than 10,000 Reds fans walked out on the game to protest the steep rise in ticket prices announced by the club.
This was followed by a remarkable turnaround, as the Reds then conceded two goals to end up with just a point from a match that they were comfortably in charge of. Captain Henderson says that there is no excuse for that kind of mistake.
“We are focused as players about what is happening on the pitch. I don’t think anything else will bother us.”, he said, according to fourfourtwo.com.
“We can’t make that as an excuse. We have to take responsibility as individuals and a last 10 minutes like that was not good enough.
“To be leading 2-0 at 80 minutes, you have to see the game out. We have to work on it. We have to be better at doing that.”
He added that consistency is something that the team needs to work on after putting forth some brilliant displays, as well as awful ones like the one over the weekend.
Another disappointing season
All talk of a title challenge under new manager Jurgen Klopp seems to have died down after a string of poor performances. Their latest draw has seen them slip down to 9th place in the table, 12 points shy of the Champions League spots and 18 points below league leaders Leicester City.
The Reds will also have to look over their shoulder in the coming weeks as Watford, Stoke City, Crystal Palace and Chelsea are all snapping at their heels. A slip up could mean a bottom table finish for them, something which is unacceptable for a club of that stature.
