While the rest of the world would have marvelled at this goal by Wayne Rooney, Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal would have been heaving a sigh of relief as his captain put the Red Devils in front in a must-win game for the Dutchman.
Manchester United have come in for a lot of criticism of late, but they were good enough to register what ultimately was a comfortable 3-1 victory against Derby Country on Friday, and it all began with Rooney curling in a beautiful shot from the edge of the penalty area.
However, the Manchester United captain looked like he was offside when his fellow forward Anthony Martial passed the ball to him. The England striker seemed to be coming back from an offside position in that moment, and replays clearly suggest that he was in fact beyond the last defender. It takes little away from a truly stunning effort, however.
