Memphis Depay Should Listen To David Beckham’s Words of Inspiration Before Match Against Watford

David Beckham recently spoke about his feelings for the number 7 shirt at Manchester United, and his words are something that the present number 7, Memphis Depay, would do well to listen to.

.

David Beckham was one of the most skilled midfielders that England has ever produced and, between 1997 and 2003, made the number 7 shirt his own at Manchester United. The iconic jersey has also been worn by the likes of George Best, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past.

The much-hyped Dutch winger Memphis Depay is the player who currently lays claim to the number 7 shirt at Old Trafford, but has failed to impress after his arrival from PSV Eindhoven this summer, and has found himself on the bench for the recent games the Red Devils have played.

Don’t fear number 7

Memphis may take some inspiration from the words of David Beckham, who recently spoke about his association with the shirt number, which he wore one more time for the UNICEF charity match at Old Trafford.

‘The No 7 is special for Manchester United,” Beckham said (via Daily Mail). “I don’t see it as an intimidation, I see it as an honour. When you get given the No 7 shirt, it doesn’t matter who has worn it in the past or what that player has achieved. It’s special and personally I don’t think it comes with any pressure. It was always an inspiration for me.

“I’ve never seen it as my shirt. It was George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona. I just want whoever is No 7 to do well and keep Manchester United as one of the best clubs in the world, if not the best.”

Misfiring Memphis has a shot

Memphis Depay has scored only one goal in the Premier League season, which is not what was expected of him after the big money transfer from PSV. The youngster has also received criticism from manager Louis van Gaal for not being a team player.
The winger has not featured in the first team since October 4th, but the injury to Anthony Martial could prompt a return for the Dutchman against Watford, and it is an opportunity that he must grasp with both hands if he wants to follow in the footsteps of the legends that have donned the famous Number 7 in the past.
