Per Mertesacker Admits Former Chelsea FC Goalkeeper Petr Cech’s “Hunger” Has Rubbed Off On The Squad

Arsenal FC captain Per Mertesacker was full of praise for the new Gunners’ goalkeeper Petr Cech, as he believes the squad has gained a new a hungera for trophies.

Former Chelsea FC goalkeeper Petr Cech may have transferred to Arsenal during the summer, but is already having an undeniable effect on the defence as well as in the squad. John Terry had previously predicted that Cech would help Arsenal win 10-12 points over the course of the season, and the current Arsenal FC captain Per Mertesacker has echoed similar sentiments. In an interview with Sky Sports, the Germany international expressed his belief that the personality of Cech has rubbed off on the squad and can be seen during the game.

“You know that if they get a really clear chance Petr can do something about it. He’s always someone who can save your day. That gives everyone a big lift, not only the back four. The way he is commanding and vocal makes him vital. He is one of our leaders and he deserves it.

“He has played at a high level and he is still very hungry and, no matter how successful he was at Chelsea, I think he gives our team that hunger we maybe need. He is an experienced player that everyone looks up to and he’s important for our structure as well.a

Arsenal to win the Premier League?

Arsenal FC have shown tremendous form this season as they maintain their pressure on league leaders Manchester City, but this season everything — beginning from the managera s confidence in the press conference to the players nicking result when the chips are down — has been different in comparison to the previous few seasons. Arsenal FC fans will no doubt be wondering whether this might finally be their year. Mertesacker, though, was careful enough to tread lightly on the question regarding their season ambitions.

a We haven’t proved anything yet but what we have learned is to take it game by game,” said the defender. “The last couple of years we have lost a few games here and there, especially away from home. But we take it really seriously because we can see there is not that much difference between the top and us. Last season I think it was 15 points at this stage and now it’s completely different. It gives you a reason to be as efficient as we are at the minute.”

Petr Cech – the missing piece?

Arsenal FCa s title challenge over the past few seasons have suffered for various reasons — one of which was a lack of top class goalkeeper. The emergence of Francis Coquelin solved their problem in midfield, while Wenger resolved the problematic position in goal by signing Petr Cech, who is considered to be one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.

Former team-mate Terry had emphasised the importance of Cech during the past decade and soon after the Czech goalkeeper signed for their London rivals, the Blues’ skipper predicted that he would help the Gunners win at least 10 points over the course of the season. It would be worth noting that the difference between the team that won the title last season — Chelsea FC — and Arsenal, who were third, was only 12 points.
