“We Have Something To Prove,” Kompany Fires Warning To Title Rivals

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has admitted he feels his side has plenty to prove after underachieving last season, as they finished a distant second to champions Chelsea FC.

Manchester City, who won the league in 2013-14, finished eight points behind eventual champions Chelsea FC last season.

However, City have already opened up a two point lead over the champions after making a winning start to the new campaign with a 3-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion with Chelsea FC only managing a home draw against Swansea.

“We have something to prove”: Kompany

Vincent Kompany, who scored Manchester City’s third goal in the win, admitted he has to win over his doubters after the way he finished last season with his form coming under increased criticism.

“We have something to prove,” he was quoted saying by BBC in an interview with Sky Sports. “Last season was below what we are used to. If you had looked at the training sessions, we are a team of great intent. For us it was a great way to start the first game.”

“I have worked hard and sometimes you get judged on how you finish a season. Until November I was having a good season but it didn’t matter because we didn’t win anything. I just want to get back to my best level and I am extremely hungry for more silverware.”

.

‘We need to put in a great performance against Chelsea FC’

City’s next fixture sees them host Chelsea FC in what is a clash of potential top two.

“It will be a big game very early in the season,” said Kompany, speaking to Sky Sports.

“We can’t go into it thinking it’s about winning the league, but it will matter so we need to put in a great performance.”

Sterling a welcome addition

Raheem Sterling made his Manchester City debut after his controversial A?49m move from Liverpool FC this summer and he failed to take two good chances, with one of them being a one on one with the goalkeeper.

However, Kompany believes the 20-year-old England forward’s pace has added to City’s attacking threat and is a welcome addition to the side.

“The main thing is that we have some new tools to use this season,” he said. “Raheem has given us sharpness and speed to hurt teams when we’re defending.

“It gives other teams things to think about. It gives us that bit of danger we need and we have so many tools to hurt teams.”
