Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has confirmed he wants to sign two new players in order to improve their squad. .
When asked if he was expecting further arrivals, Van Gaal told MUTV: “I hope so. No, we are not finished yet, I think.”
“It is what I have said already in many press conferences. We need a balance in the selection and I think we still need to improve at least two positions and we shall do that when it is possible.”
“But we shall only buy when the player can give a contribution to our level. And, of course, that is in the eyes of our staff, but I have to have confidence that he can cope with the rhythm of the Premier League.”
Who could these two players be?
Manchester United have made four signings this summer, already, strengthening their defense with Matteo Darmian from Torino, adding steel and creativity in midfield by bringing in Morgan Schneiderlin from Southampton and Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich. The club have also bolstered their attack by snapping up Dutch winger Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
The club’s chase of a central defender is well documented with credible reports in the media linking them with moves for Nicolas Otamendi of Valencia, Sergio Ramos of Real Madrid, and Mats Hummels was also on Manchester United’s radar before he decided to commit his future to Borussia Dortmund.
With Rafael Benitez recently coming out and saying that Sergio Ramos is going to stay at Real Madrid, the club have little alternative but to go for Otamendi if they have to sign a good defender, unless, of course, they join Chelsea FC in the battle for John Stones.
Mehdi Benatia is another man they could look at given the player’s apparent unhappiness at Bayern Munich which he has been very vocal about.
Well, what is for sure is the club do need a defender, given that they conceded 37 goals in the league, only fourth best with the title going to Chelsea FC, who conceded the least goal in the league.
