Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva is looking to play with continuity as he welcomed links with Italian club Napoli.
Lucas has started only two games in the Premier League this season. His presence in the starting line-up against Real Madrid was a great opportunity to show his worth and he did himself no harm by putting on a decent display against the European champions. Napoli were close to securing his signature this summer but ultimately the move did not happen. Speaking to Gianluca Di Marzio, Lucas dropped a hint that he might be interested to come to Italy.
“This summer Napoli was interested, just like many other clubs. Benitez has asked once again for my purchase. My objective is to play with continuity. Weai??i??ll see”
“I am not talking to anyone right now because I have a contract. But, since I am not playing, Iai??i??ll have to look around because I want to play,”
“Last summer there was also talk of Napoli, but nothing that was satisfying for all the parties. It is true: Benitez has always shown great confidence in me.”
The 27-year-old is no longer a part of the first team plans of Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and it looks likely that he will seek a move in this January transfer window even though he has another three years left in his contract.
Napoli have been actively looking for a high-profile midfielder to play alongside Gokhan Inler and Jorginho after the departure of Swiss international Valon Behrami in the summer. They were linked with numerous players such as Borussisa Monchengladbagai??i??s Christoph Kramer, Lyon captain Maxime Gonalons, Manchester Unitedai??i??s Marouane Fellaini and Lucas Leiva but ultimately settled for David Lopez of Espanyol. However, it seems that Benitez is adamant to solve this issue in January and Napoli director Riccardo Bigon is willing to open talks with Liverpool.
After a slow start to their season, the Partenopei have bounced back with some impressive displays in recent weeks.They are looking to push for their first Scudetto since 1989. With the additional commitments of Europa League, Benitez is reportedly looking for a solid presence in the middle of the park particularly as skipper Gokhan Inler is struggling to recover from his injury. Benitez only has rookie Croatian Josip Radosevic as his backup option and this is certainly a major concern for the Spaniard. Lucas knows at this age he should be at his peak but he is not getting the game time required to re-capture his best form. Being reunited with the manager who signed him from Gremio in 2007 is an obvious attraction for the Brazilian. Lucas has spent the last seven years at Liverpool featuring in 179 Premier League matches and scoring a single goal.
