Analysis on some of the options Uruguay can choose from within their ranks as they face Italy on Tuesday.
Uruguay have so far made a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign in Brazil. They were second best in every department against Costa Rica lacking ideas and penetration. The ageing midfield did not provide the spark needed to break a resolute Costa Rica defence while they themselves conceded three sloppy goals. A Luis Suarez brace did bring them their first three points but progression from Group D is far from a settled issue. Uruguay know they must get a result in their last group game against Italy and they can call upon a few players from their squad who have (or had) an experience of playing their club football in Italy. The Azzurri squad is more or less based on Serie A clubs hence the the experience of these players might prove invaluable for Uruguay as they look to get a win next Tuesday at Estadio das Dunas.
Fernando Muslera (Lazio; now with Galatasaray)
Presently with Galatasaray, Fernando Muslera made a name for himself in Italy with Roman club Lazio. Often ignored and highly underrated, Muslera was a solid presence between the sticks for the four years he spent with the Biancocelesti. He won a Coppa Italia and a Supercup with the capital side. His positioning, agility and reach are top notch and he is not bad under the high ball either. He was prone to the occasional blunder but now seems to have matured..He is big, agile, and quick off his line and although being a reaction stopper he is prone to make blunders.
His commanding influence on his defensive backline might be lacking a bit but he is steadily improving on these aspects. But he is uncomfortable dealing with crosses and poor at saving long shots. He won two league titles, one Turkish cup and one Supercup with Turkish giants Galatasaray after his move from Lazio. This year he helped his club side knock out Italian champions Juventus from the UEFA Champions League group stage and claimed – ai???I hope this can be an appetiser… Italy are in my destiny,ai???. He would look to emulate this confidence on the pitch against Italy this Tuesday.
Diego Perez (Bologna)
The ball-winning midfielder is currently a member of the Bologna squad after joining them from Monaco four years ago. Playing central midfield in a 4-3-1-2, Perez is a hard tackling guy who thrives on making crucial interceptions and helps protect the back four. Discipline is not exactly the word we can associate with him as he incurs the wrath of plenty of referees and generally ends with most fouls committed in a single match. He picked up 10 Yellow Cards this season.
He is not exactly a goal-scoring midfielder and not known for his assists either. But he embodies the fighting spirit of his team. Perez can be a vital element for Uruguay if they look to man-mark Pirlo out of the game. If he can keep himself on the pitch for the entire 90mins then Pirlo might have some trouble getting away from his relentless pressing in the middle of the park.
Gaston Ramirez (Bologna; now with Southampton)
Ramirez isnai??i??t a big scoring threat but a forward able to hold and distribute the balls. He can start as second forward in a 4-4-2 or as attacking midfielder behind one or two attackers. Ramirez likes to cut inside from the right and link with the frontman which tells us that he also suited to play as wing forward in formations with 3 men up top. But he is not a pure striker. He started in a 4-3-2-1 and 4-3-3 systems with Bologna while in Italy behind the lone forward.
He is a wonderful dribbler and a highly intelligent footballer. The crafty number ten with a cracking left foot is an aesthetically good footballer but he doesnai??i??t have the work rate to be accommodated in this midfield quartet. The former Bologna man might not be a starter in this Uruguay lineup but he can most definitely make a difference if he is brought on as a substitute.
Walter Gargano (Parma)
His unassuming central midfield role affords other attack-minded players the freedom to shine further up the field. Gargano started 20 games this season for Parma and was a sub in 2. He scored one goal and helped set up another as Parma enjoyed a very fruitful campaign this season. He keeps distribution simple and effective, and despite playing deep in the middle looks to create goalscoring oppurtunities. He likes to carry the ball forward unlike Diego Perez or Arevalo Rios and this might be one attribute which will see him enter the game in the second half to make a difference. His defensive contributions are praiseworthy and it is clear that Tabarez values him a lot.
He is an alternative to Perez and Arevalo and plays a similar role with more ambition in possession. Midfield warriors Diego Perez, Egidio Arevalo Rios and Walter Gargano embodies the typical ai???garra charrA?aai??i?? spirit and will fight tooth and nail to protect the defence and make Uruguay extremely difficult to break down. The whole team will be expected to work hard as a single cohesive unit and make life uncomfortable for the opposition. This use of midfield enforcers to sit deep and stifle the opposition play is basically an effective way to cover a faltering central defence which is one of Uruguayai??i??s main weaknesses.
Alvaro Gonzalez (Lazio)
A typically tenacious and gritty midfielder of Lazio whose effective pressing game leads to breaking down of opponents movements in the final third and also in the middle of the park. He is capable of playing in both 4-2-3-1 and 4-1-2-1-2 systems. GonzA?lez usually starts wide right but it is the defensive side of his game that impresses most; He records pretty high percentages of tackles won and interceptions per game and unlike Perez he commits very less fouls.
Never shy to back off from a challenge, Gonzalez is another option for Oscar Tabarez if he plans to stifle the Italian midfield and limit their passing game. He notched up 1 goal and 2 assists this season for Lazio but was a solid presence in all the games he featured. Gonzalez is not that inventive with possession but he is a solid option in midfield for the La Celeste. Alvaro Gonzalez covers various positions on the pitch, primarily on the flanks and in midfield.
Martin Caceres (Juventus)
He is a player that could probably be a full-time starter for just about any other Serie A team who has fully accepted his role in the Juventus squad for Antonio Conte. He doesn’t complain, he does his job whenever called upon and he does it quite well. CA?ceres is a starter-quality player who probably plays a fraction of the time he should. That obviously has nothing to do with talent or technique. He is a bit unlucky as he is competing against three of the best defenders in Italy. But when he is called upon CA?ceres delivers. And it doesn’t even matter where he is asked to play on the field. Filling in for Andrea Barzagli , filling in for Giorgio Chiellini , getting an occasional start at right back if Antonio Conte wants a four-man defense. While Juve shelled out ai??i??15 million to Torino for Angelo Ogbonna this past summer, many thought CA?ceres would fall behind in the pecking order. But CA?ceres made over 25 appearances this season and he was the first defender Conte seemed to trust when somebody in the back three got injured.
With every game that passes, CA?ceres only seems to get better and better. As he continues to get the chance to play, he is becoming more and more consistent. When Andrea Barzagli was injured this year there were fears that the congested fixture list would be difficult for Juventus to handle without the ace defender. His replacement MartAi??n CA?ceres was at the heart of a solid defensive unit in his absence. CA?ceres himself flourished with a steady run of games under his belt. An exemplary professional who inspite of limited game time has always answered the emergency call for his club, CA?ceres has proven to be more than capable of doing a job in the three men backline while he plays as a left back for Uruguay. He is very confident with the ball evident from his number of completed passes this season.
Edinson Cavani (Napoli; now with PSG)
The Salto native was outstanding in front of goal – with 78 strikes in a mere three seasons at Napoli ai??i?? but that was not the entire story, as he is a complete player with a tireless work rate, and that cements his status as a world class striker. When Edy joined Napoli from Palermo in July 2010, Neapolitans could not have imagined what he had in store for them. They considered him a raw, agile and generous second striker or a wing forward but his exemplary movements and stunning goals made him an instant hero there. Since then the religious No.7 has spearheaded unexpected Scudetto challenges from Naples. Cavani scored 33, 33 and 38 goals respectively in all competitions in three seasons at the San Paolo. His goals included long rangers, curlers into the top corner, free-kicks, brilliant headers and rounding off team-moves ai??i?? he formed a part of the holy trinity with Marek Hamsik and Pocho Lavezzi.
His hunger, desire to chase the ball and relentless running are as legendary as his goals. Cavani, plays a supporting role to Luis Suarez in the national team. Often viewed as a pure number nine, Cavani is capable of covering many other roles, he is happy to work the channels and is now accustomed to a position wide right of a front three. At international level his role is that of a hard-working support striker often located very deep considering Uruguay play a counter-attacking game. The entire team tends to sit a bit deep and therefore Cavani spends his time attempting to connect the midfield. He scored a brace last time against Italy in the semi-final of the Confed Cup last year.
Abel Hernandez (Palermo)
The story of Hernandezai??i??s career to date has primarily been one of unfulfilled promise.
Star performances for Uruguay at U-20 level earned him a move to Europe with Palermo. He made his senior international debut in 2010 on the back of an encouraging sophomore season in Italy. However, Hernandez failed to convert that early potential into consistent performances at either club or international level since. He missed the majority of the 2012-13 campaign with a knee injury but returned rejuvenated for the new season. He initially set his heart on a move to another club but eventually played a vital role to assist Palermo in their bid for promotion.
He scored 14 goals in 28 appearances, as the club achieved their target in some style, finishing with record points in Serie B history and they were well ahead of their nearest challengers Empoli. Hernandez only produces sporadically, but his unpredictability and calmness in front of goal may be exactly what Tabarez needs to enliven the attack. Hernandez is capable of providing that little extra bit of conviction that Uruguay lack when Suarez is absent. He needs to play with energy and full commitment, involve himself as much as possible and be unafraid of making mistakes. Hernandez is in the squad as a wild card and has to show that he can be a difference-maker if he wants to force his way into the starting XI.
