Demba Ba proved to be the hero for the London side as the substitute managed to get a late goal to make sure Chelsea spoil PSG’s party in the return leg and go through to the semi finals of the Champions League.
Chelsea won the match 2-0 and the win proved to be enough for Jose Mourinho’s side as the aggregate scoreline readAi??3-3, and the Blues progressed to the semi final stage with the away goal advantage.
Chelsea suffered a setback early in the game as talismanic midfielder Eden Hazard limped off 17 minutes into the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. Fortunately for the Blues, substitute Andre Schurrle had put the Stamford Bridge clash back in the balance with his opener in the 32nd minute.
Mourinho sent on Ba in place of Lampard with 66 minutes gone. The breakthrough came for Chelsea with just three minutes remaining as the ex-Newcastle man proved to be an unlikely hero and scooped homeAi??Azpilicueta’sAi??deflected shot from the edge of the box.
The visitors were subdued without the presence of Ai??striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic and it didn’t help the case as Edinson Cavani missed a glorious chance to wrap up the tie in the final stages.
Chelsea’s captain John Terry was obviously jubilant and spoke:
“We gave ourselves a chance by not conceding. We had to hit the big man and he scores. This competition means a lot to us. The experiences we have had keeps you fighting and believing. Winning it was the best feeling ever. These big performances are what we live for.
“Everyone doubted us tonight but we showed great character and fight to come back. It all paid off.”
The Blues found a new hero in a signing which was pretty much labelled a ‘flop’ one. Demba Ba looked set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. However, things might have changed for the ex-Newcastle man, and he spoke after the match:
“It all happened so quick. I saw the ball and it was in the goal. I just do what I have to do when I get chances. I didn’t have chances this season but tonight I took it”, said Demba Ba

Jose Mourinho, the man who staged this comeback was clearly delighted by his team’s display and said:
“I didn’t go to the corner flag to celebrate. I went to tell them the changes we had to make. There were three minutes plus extra-time left and the way we were playing was too risky.
“I wanted Demba Ba to play in front of the defenders and Fernando Torres to defend Maxwell. I tried to use them in different jobs.
“I think we did enough at beginning of the second-half to score before we did. The contradiction of what they (PSG) are and what they wanted to do. In the second-half it was pure ball possession. But it was difficult for us to penetrate. We did it in training yesterday, with three different systems, all of which we used. The players knew what they had to do. Demba Ba made a crucial finish for us.
“It was very much deserved that the team that tried to defend was punished. The team that played with their heart deserved to go through.”
