Former FC Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita has revealed that he rejected a move to Liverpool FC to join Valencia.
Liverpool endured a pretty frustrating January transfer window as they failed to add to their squad and even missed out on Mohamed Salah and Yevhen Konoplyanka despite bidding for the wingers. But now it seems like the Merseyside club have also missed out on former Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita, who preferred to join Valencia over Liverpool.
The 34-year-old, who has won three La Liga titles and two Champions League during his time at Barcelona, revealed that he was in advanced talks with Liverpool before Valencia came in with an offer.
“When we received the call from Valencia, talks with Liverpool were at a very advanced stage.
“But then I told my agent we were going to Valencia. I did not doubt for a second.
“When I came to play at Mestalla with Sevilla or Barcelona I suffered a lot to win, because this is a really big club with fantastic fans. That is why I opted to come here.” ai??i?? Keita said in an interview.
Keita also insisted that short term deal with Spanish club works out in his favour as he will have a good time before extending his stay at Valencia.
“It is important that this is clear. I am coming here from China. To sign for a year-and-a-half is a difficult thing for the club.
“I told them to relax, that I would sign for six months and if I have the right level we will all have time to continue. That is better for the club and for everyone.” ai??i?? He added.
Keita could have been a solid addition for Liverpool who lack a bit of depth in the midfield, especially with Lucas Leivaai??i??s fitness concerns. Liverpoolai??i??s failure to materialize any of the deals in the January transfer window could come back to haunt them as the race of the fourth spot heats up.
