Van Gaal Challenges Manchester United Players To Prove Themselves At The Highest Level Ahead Of Champions League Return

As Manchester United prepare to return to Champions League after an absence of a year, Louis van Gaal has challenged his players to prove themselves at the highest level.

Having spent over 250m GBP over the last two summer transfer windows, Manchester United have returned to the Champions League after a season-long hiatus.

Louis van Gaal has won the competition once with Ajax back in 95-96 and also took Bayern Munich to the final in 2009-10, only to lose out to Jose Mourinho’s Inter Milan.

Manchester United players need to prove themselves

Ahead of his side’s Group B meeting against the Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven, the United manager has urged his men to prove their worth in Europe’s top competition. The English giants have been handed a fairly tough group, but nothing suggests they cannot top it if they were to perform to their potential.

.

“We have to show on the pitch if we are able to win matches on the highest level,” the United manager was quoted as saying by ESPN FC.

“That’s also a challenge for us now. Last year we were fourth in the Premier League.

“We qualified ourselves this year and that was our aim so now we have to show if we are able to play at that level and that I don’t know, neither. I have to wait and see.

“I think the Champions League is a higher podium than the Premier League but maybe it’s not like that.”

Manchester United fans will hope that the players respond to the challenge thrown at them by the manager and prove their worth in Europe’s elite club competition.
