On Another Day Chelsea Would Have Beaten Southampton, Says Gary Cahill

Chelsea center back Gary Cahill felt his side could have won the game against Southampton if it wasn’t for Fraizer Forster who had a fantastic game and earned his side a draw.

Chelsea took the lead in the first half but were often opened up by Southampton’s attack who deservedly got their equalizer just eight minutes after Chelsea’s opener.

Cahill revealed that his side had a good second half compared to the first and could have won the game on another day, “The second-half performance was the way we want to play, creating and moving the ball around, in the first half it probably wasna t. We went 1-0 up, we needed that intensity back in our game and it wasna t quite there.

“The second half was pleasing because it was much better. Their goalkeeper was fantastic, it was one of those days where he pulled off saves left, right and centre.

“On another day we win the game, unfortunately we drew but credit to them, theya re a great side and they made it tough for us.”

A win would have taken Chelsea eight points clear with a game in hand which would have all but ended Manchester City’s faint hopes of retaining the title this season. With a six points behind, City still have a sniff if Chelsea manage to falter in the next few games.

“There was a bit frustration after the game because we wanted to win, but I think the next victory is just around the corner. Ita s important for us to get that but ita s far from doom and gloom in terms of the league. Man City dropped points on Saturday and we gained one,” Cahill said.

“A six-point lead with a game in hand is a good position for us to be in right now, wea ve got 10 games to go and wea ll try to kick on,” he added.

Teams are playing very defensively against us, says Courtois

Forster’s opposite number, Thibaut Courtois, too had a good game and admitted that teams have a conservative mindset against the Londoners now compared to the start of the season, “Ita s a pity we couldna t score the second goal, we pushed Southampton back into their box but we couldna t find the gaps to score,a said Courtois. a We had quite a few chances but Forster made some good saves.

“Sometimes there are moments in a season where things arena t going as well as you want them to. Teams are playing very defensively against us, maybe at the start of the season they were more offensive and there was more space.

“Wea ve gained a point on Man City, obviously if we were three ahead it would have been better so thata s a pity, but Southampton are a good side, theya ve done well this season and it wasna t an easy game,” he added.
