Manchester United have taken their first step in boosting their squad for next season by signing Dutch youngster Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven.
Manchester United confirmed the signing of Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven. The Red Devils managed to fend off interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool to convince the winger into joining them. The 21-year old caught everyonea s eye during the 2014 World Cup and after a highly successful season in the Eredivisie, the youngster has been prised away by Manchester United.
He is the top-scorer in the Eredivisie
At the tender age of 21, Depay has guided PSV to the Dutch league title and is also the top-scorer in the Eridivisie. The winger has scored 21 goals in 28 matches in the league and provided 3 assists. The Dutchman is a nightmare for the defenders as he is a powerful striker with his left foot and also has very fast movement. He usually played as an inverted winger on the left and loves to cut in and take shots with his preferred right foot.
His name is in the Dutch record books
During the 2014 World Cup, Memphis Depay, despite not being a regular starter, managed to get his name into the Dutch record books. The forward became the youngest Dutchman to score a goal in a World Cup. At the age of 20 and four months, the winger scored the winner for Netherlands in the group stage match against Australia to create the record.
He was in the FIFA World Cup 2014 best young player shortlist
Despite not being a starter for Holland at the World Cup, Depay proved to be one of the most important substitutes for Louis Van Gaal. The winger had a great impact from his appearances from the bench and helped Netherland reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. The 21-year old scored 2 goals and provided 1 assist in the competition and his performances were rewarded as his name appeared in the best young player of the tournament shortlist. Varane and Pogba were the other players shortlisted; Pogba went on to win the award.
He can score from free-kicks
The Dutchman scores some really attractive goals. He has a powerful strike and he can score from long-range. Apart from that, the winger is very good from set-pieces and has a penchant for scoring from free-kicks. His goal against Heereveen last month is a great example of his abilities.
He will remind you of Cristiano Ronaldo
Running down the left flank at full pace, cutting in and taking a powerful shot at goal with his right foot is something that Depay loves to do often and he does succeed most of the times. The winger is strong, fast and hungry to score goals and that does remind you of a certain Portuguese. The Dutchman has often being compared to his national teammate, Arjen Robben, but he reminds you more of Cristiano Ronaldo. Like the Portuguese, Depay has signed for Manchester United at an early age. It remains to be seen whether he can emulate the former Manchester United star and break as many records.
