Even though Chelsea FC have made their worst ever start to a Premier League season under Roman Abramovich, former England international Joe Cole believes they could turn it around and even be champions again
15 games into the season, Chelsea FC lie an incredible 17 points behind league leaders Leicester City, whom they face on Monday at the King Power Stadium. With even the top four looking like a distant dream now, manager Jos Mourinho has himself acknowledged that his team will not be able to defend the league title.
However, former Stamford Bridge fan favourite Joe Cole has claimed that the Blues could turn it around this season, and have what it takes to beat everybody between now and the end of the season.
Cole believes Chelsea FC can be champions again .
The Coventry City winger said in an interview with Sky Sports that Chelsea FC have the quality to recover from their nightmare start — to the extent that they can defend their title this season. Cole was also full of praise for Mourinho, opining that the Portuguese is the best manager in the world.
“Anything is possible, and that’s why we watch football,” Cole said. “You can’t rule them out as championsa that team could beat everyone from now until the end of the season.
“I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but it’s football. It’ll be interesting in the next few weeks. The fans haven’t turned, they’re right behind the manager and the chairman. The main thing you’ve got to think about is you’ve got the best manager in the world therea fact. That’s not down to opinion, he’s the most decorated over the different leagues.
“For Chelsea to move forward, you’ve got to stick with the manager and let him do what he does best. I don’t think anyone can dispute his record and I’m sure he’ll be relishing turning it around.”
Chelsea FC will struggle to finish fourth this season
As optimistic as Joe Cole may be, the horrific start to the season means that the Blues face an uphill battle to even finish in the Champions League spots this season. Although a lot will be learned about Leicester City over the coming weeks, their success thus far this season cannot be dismissed, and it seems entirely possible that they could find themselves in the top four at the end of the season.
The likes of Manchester City, Arsenal FC and Manchester United are all likely to finish in the top four, while the likes of Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur also have better chances of finishing in the top four than Chelsea FC.
The Blues will likely forget about setting targets at this stage of the season, and as Mourinho said in his recent press conference, will just focus on trying to win each match as it comes.
