David Luiz Apologises After Celebrating His Equaliser Against Chelsea

Chelsea

Former Chelsea defender David Luiz has apologised to the Chelsea fans for celebrating his 86th-minute equaliser against the blues yesterday.

Paris Saint-Germain were reduced to 10-men in the 31st minute and played for almost an hour with the numerical disadvantage which showed their character. Luiz, who left Chelsea for PSG last summer for a massive fee of A?50m, said that the emotions got the better of him on a difficult night for his side despite revealing prior to the game that he will not celebrate if he scored.

The Brazilian said, “Tonight was good for me to score. I said I wouldn’t celebrate but my emotions I couldn’t control. Thank you to Chelsea and sorry I celebrated because I was so emotional.”

“It is amazing for everyone, amazing for Paris club, for Paris city. We did a great game, we tried to win the game.

Luiz added that his side’s aim is to win the Champions League, but conceded they still have a long way to go before they can achieve that, “I am happy to be in the next round but we have a long way to go to win the Champions League. We have to keep our feet on the floor.

“My cycle finished in Chelsea, PSG gave me a great opportunity to continue my career. I was very happy at Chelsea. I respect everyone,” he said.

The 27-year old had made 142 appearances for Chelsea in a four-year spell from 2011 to 2014 and was a firm favourite amongst the Chelsea faithful. Despite that, there were a few fans who gave him some stick after he was involved in a few altercations with Diego Costa and was even booked. Luiz put in a good defensive performance with compatriot Thiago Silva after returning to Stamford Bridge with a point to prove. He had stoked the fire ahead of the clash after revealing that Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was not a special manager, “He is special for you, not for me.

Luiz has already won the UEFA Champions League with Chelsea and will look to help his current side PSG in achieving that this season. The Parisians have some good players and showed that they can be compact defensively as they managed to control the game despite having a numerical disadvantage against Chelsea. With attacking players like Ibrahimovic, Cavani and Pastore, there is no reason why they cannot hurt opponents as they showed against Barcelona in the group stages.
