Chelsea FC manager Jose Mourinho has accused his rivals for the Premier League title, namely Manchester City and Manchester United to try and buy the title.
Chelsea FC have not splashed the cash this summer, with only Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao having joined the club, the first for a fee of around A?10 million and the second on loan. The Premier League champions have a well settled squad and did not need to invest heavily in the squad, with Mourinho insisting that the club would only replace a departing player.
Chelsea FC are the second biggest spenders in the last 11 years
Chelsea FC have themselves been one of the biggest spenders in the world since the arrival of Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich at the helm of the club, with Mourinho in his first spell with the club, spending exorbitantly buying titles to establish his legacy. The 52-year-old himself spent in excess of circa A?150 million to bring on the likes of Petr Cech, Arjen Robben and Didier Drogba to the club in his first spell, but has insisted the club have changed their ways, and will not be spending heavily in a bid to try and buy the title, like they used to do, or like their rivals are doing it now.
Speaking after the penalty shoot-out win over French champions PSG, the Portuguese said–
“In the beginning of Mr Abramovich coming to Chelsea, Chelsea was buying the title
“Now, they are buying the title. All of them, they are buying the title.
“It is up to us to be strong and to fight them and, obviously, to try and win it again, even without the big investments.”

An ironic statement from one of the biggest spenders in the World
The Blues, who may not have spent A?50 odd million on one single player since the arrival of Fernando Torres from Liverpool FC, have spent significant cash in each window, recruiting highly-rated players and then shipping them out in the following windows, when they could not stake a claim for a starting berth at Stamford Bridge, examples of these include, Kevin De Bruyne, Mohammad Salah, Filipe Luis, Andre Schurrle among many others.
The London outfit have also invested significantly in the capture of regular first-team players like Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard, Willian, Oscar and Nemanja Matic. Manchester United have invested heavily in the past two seasons, following the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, which saw them fall out of the Champions League, and the club continue to add to their significant roster in a bid to challenge for the title. Manchester City, however have just started with their spending, having splashed a record A?49 million for the transfer of Raheem Sterling from Liverpool FC. Apart from Chelsea FC only Arsenal FC, from last seasons top 4 have not spent big so far this summer, with even The Reds spending close to A?80 million.
Keeping in mind their continuous heavy spending, the Portuguese’s remarks are rather ironic more than anything else.
