“But now we have to live match for match and that is the most important thing. We have to beat Liverpool, which is more important than thinking about City or Chelsea.”
“I still think Liverpool can fight for the top four places and still I have belief in that team because they have fantastic players, but they also have a lot of injuries which is not so easy to manage.”
Van Gaal has challenged his charges to turn Old Trafford into a “fortress” and believes home advantage will be decisive tonight.
“You have to make a fortress of your home stadium,” he said.
“Now we have shown it and hope to continue it against Liverpool.The philosophy is to attack with all the team and defend with all the team. Then it’s difficult to beat.”
Sunday will be Louis Van Gaal’s first experience as a manager of the intense rivalry between United and Liverpool, the fiercest rivals in English football, with 20 titles and 18 respectively. The Dutchman said everyone at United including first-team chef Mike Connelly had left him in no doubt of the burning rivalry between the two sets of fans and of the importance to get all three points.
