Arkadiusz Milik and substitute Sebastian Mila were on target in Polandai??i??s famous win over Germany last night.
Poland defeated Germany for the first time in 19 meetings in Group D of Euro 2016 qualifiers. Germany had won 12 and drawn 6 of their previous fixtures against their opponents last night but in front a sell-out 57,000 crowd in Warsaw Poland claimed a historic win. A tight match was settled in the second half when Ajax striker Arkadiusz Milik got on the end of a great pass from Borussia Dortmund right back A?ukasz Piszczek to head home past the hapless Manuel Neuer. The Polish defence held firm and they eventually doubled their lead when Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski squared the ball for Sebastian Mila to seal a famous win.
Despite admitting Germanyai??i??s poor finishing cost them the tie, Jogi Loew was reluctant to blame his players solely for the loss.
“Of course we are disappointed because we lost here. But, honestly, I cannot blame the team. One little thing went wrong: we were too wasteful with our chances. The finishing touch was missing, that’s why we did not score a goal.”
“But I was absolutely satisfied with our style of play. We created many chances and Poland scored with their first dangerous attack. Maybe we did not succeed in using the width of the field in the final minutes. In the first half we lacked depth in our play.”
“After a loss you must look for a reaction. We have to get our strength back and we must win the match on Tuesday. Republic of Ireland will play in the same way, they will be playing defensively.”
Captain Manuel Neuer felt this defeat could have been avoided. Speaking to DFB.de, the German goalkeeper said :”It was an avoidable defeat. We didnai??i??t play badly. If we had scored the first goal, then we would have won. I came out bravely for the first goal, but I was too late ai??i?? it was a mistake by me.”
Debutant Karim Bellarabi said Germany are already looking forward to the match on Tuesday: “Our intentions were to come away with three points. Unfortunately, we havenai??i??t been able to do that. Now we have to win against Ireland on Tuesday. Iai??i??m happy with my debut and had chances to score ai??i?? but I could or maybe should have put one away.”
Mats Hummels felt his side were the better team on the night and that this loss was a ai???jokeai??i??: “We were the better team by far. The defeat is a joke to be honest. We have to blame ourselves for not scoring a goal. If we fail to do so, then a game like that can shift. Effectiveness is whatai??i??s decisive in football.”
Germany are currently fourth in Group D behind Poland, Republic of Ireland and Scotland with a solitary win and one defeat.
