The Serie A campaign for the 2014-15 season will kick off on 30th August this month while the final match-week is expected to be held on 31st May, 2015. While the teams are busy gearing up for the new season, it is a bit early to predict the outcome of the league season this year. There will be more additions and departures in the squads while with presidents like Zamparini in the house there is always a chance that a coach gets fired even before the season has began. Till now, few exciting talking points have already emerged before the start of the new season.
Mixture of youth and experience gives Roma the advantage
Roma had a wonderful campaign last year. Coming on the back of a disappointing season under Zdenek Zeman which culminated with the painful Coppa Italia final loss against arch-rivals Lazio, the Giallorossi fans did not have many expectations from their team as Erik Lamela, Marquinhos and Osvaldo all left before the start of the new season. Newly appointed coach Rudi Garcia did not set targets any higher than regaining a place in Europe. At the end of the season, Roma finished second and truth being told had it not been for a record breaking campaign of Juventus, Roma might well have emerged champions last year. Their points tally was good enough to see them win the league in five editions of the last seven Serie A campaigns. They went 17 games unbeaten and held pole position for nine weeks. The rejuvenated capital side entertained the audience with some sumptuous football on display with figures like Mehdi Benatia, Miralem Pjanic and Kevin Strootman all having impressive seasons while Gervinho, Leandro Castan and Mattia Destro were consistent performers as they pushed Juventus to the limit in the title race. While Juventus are still reeling from Antonio Conteai??i??s sudden departure, Roma have quietly gone about in their business in strengthening an already solid squad.
While Seydou Keita and Urby Emanuelson have joined the team as backups, Roma strengthened their already strong defence by adding Davide Astori from Cagliari and Ashley Cole who joined on a free transfer from Chelsea. The fact that they are holding onto their talisman Mehdi Benatia ensures that Roma can expect another solid defensive unit to function this season as well after they conceded only 25 times throughout the entire campaign last year. Keita and Coleai??i??s experience at the top level will come handy in the Champions League as well. Both Emanuelson and Keita signed a one year deal with Roma having the option of extending it to another year if things go well.
Three talented young players joined the ranks as well as Walter Sabatini secured a two year loan for the highly rated Salih Ucan from Fenerbahce. Leandro Paredes(Boca Juniors) and Antonio Sanabria joined permanently after they were bought on loan last season in Janauary. The Paraguyan striker earned rave reviews during his time at La Masia and will be a genuinely good addition this season for the Giallorossi. But the biggest coup was hijacking the Juan Iturbe deal from Juventus. With Gervinho and Iturbe on the flanks Roma definitely look a dangerous outfit this season. Rudi Garcia will count on Miraljem Pjanic to orchestrate the midfield while Kevin Strootman will return after his layoff from injury. Still one month left in the transfer window and some changes might happen in this squad, but on paper Roma look really strong and they have a golden chance this year to win their first Scudetto since 2001.
Allegri must develop a professional working relationship with Pirlo
Massimiliano Allegriai??i??s appointment as manager came as an unpleasant surprise to many Juventus fans but the biggest point to consider was how Allegri could work with Andrea Pirlo whom he marginalized four years ago which led to his departure from Milan. Allegri won the Scudetto in his first year during which Pirlo made only 12 appearances due to an injury. In his autobiography Pirlo revealed that Allegri did not think he was suitable enough to play in front of the defence and he preferred Mark van Bommel in that position. Pirlo was asked to play in the left of midfield which he politely refused and moved to arch-rivals Juventus signaling a shift in power as he led the Turin side to three consecutive titles and has been majestic since he left Milanello in tears. Allegri and Adriano Galliani were made to look like fools. Milan looked well on course to win the title in Conteai??i??s first year but some important events changed the destiny of the title race like Muntariai??i??s ghost goal, Thiago Silvaai??i??s injury, Zlatan Ibrahimovicai??i??s suspension. Milan are on a downward spiral since then as all the legends like Alessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf left while Silva and Ibrahimovic were sold as part of the austerity drive initiated by the management.
Allegri lost his job last January but now finds himself in his second stint with Pirlo. Andrea Pirlo has been the central figure of the renaissance in Turin and Allegri surely wonai??i??t commit the same mistake here. But he has to develop a working relationship with Pirlo first. Sure they are both professionals but a lack of trust between the two could severely hamper the proceedings this season for Juventus. The fans are already dissatisfied with the situation regarding Conte and this will further enrage them. Will the past be forgotten and forgiven? How this situation pans out will definitely be one of the major talking points this season in Italy.
Inzaghi has a tough job in hand to rebuild AC Milan
AC Milan start their new journey under newly appointed coach Pippo Inzaghi after their messy divorce with club legend Clarence Seedorf. Inzaghi was promoted from the Primavera and has already roped in Micheal Agazzi from Chievo along with Alex and Jeremy Menez from PSG. First thing he needs to make sure is to get back the dressing-room harmony which was missing in the previous years. The team needs leaders and Adil Rami and De Jong will look to provide the much needed direction the squad desperately needs. Inzaghi has already laid down his laws and though it remains to be seen whether they are strictly followed or not , the nature of his press conferences have suggested that Inzaghi has a fixed target on his mind and is determined to improve the future of this club.
Mario Balotelliai??i??s future is still under consideration while Robinho is finally expected to leave. Inzaghi will use his favored 4-3-3 formation and much will be expected from Stephan El Shaarawy who returns after a long injury layoff. The squad does not look likely to challenge for the Scudetto but the primary target of Inzaghi will be to bring a sense of stability and positive atmosphere within the club. The fortunes of the club have taken a dip since the last year and it will be a tough challenge to resurrect them instantly. Inzaghi would look to prove his doubters wrong and hope his managerial career with AC Milan will be equally or more successful than his stint as a player.

The less said about his defensive organization the better, perhaps the reason why he is termed as a ai???beautiful loserai??i?? by the media. His game-play is based on high pressing and lateral movements so his training sessions are grueling as stamina is a major component of his side. Zeman holds a degree in sports medicine and he precisely knows the training regime to help his team attain the shape needed to fulfill the demands of his highly demanding system. Marco Sau will be reunited with his old boss who gave him his first break with Foggia. Zeman created wonders with a provincial side Lecce in 2004 and he would be looking to do the same with Cagliari this term. His Pescara side was a joy to watch with Lorenzo Insigne drifting in from the wings, Ciro Immobile upfront and Marco Veratti dictating play as a regista. Flamengo prodigy Adryan could well mature on to become a solid deep lying midfielder under the tutelage of Zeman. Whatever happens, one thing is for sure; it wonai??i??t be dull as is the case always with Zeman being involved.

It looked unlikely at the beginning of last season when Palermo president Mauricio Zamparini unsurprisingly fired head coach Gennaro Gattuso from his post after a run of unimpressive results but Palermo regrouped under Guiseppe Iachini who guided them to top flight football after their unfortunate relegation in 2013. They have a good and experienced squad which needs some minor additions and they need to replace their Northern Irish striker Kyle Lafferty who joined Norwich this summer. Abel Hernandez played an important role while Ezequiel Munoz was a steady presence at the back. The signing of highly rated Bulgarian playmaker Ivaylo Chochev looks a shrewd acquisition.
It promises to be an action-packed season for the Sicilian side with Zamparini already setting the tone with his dismissal of the sporting director. A man who is known to sack managers for fun has already done it 52 times since taking over at Venezia. While it cannot be denied that Zamparini was a major influence in the meteoric rise of Palermoai??i??s fortunes, he also has to take a fair share of blame for their relegation in 2013. The farce surrounding Guiseppe Sannino, Gian Piero Gasperini, and Alberto Malesani was comical to say the least and ultimately the chaos on the bench led to them dropping out of Serie A after nine years in the top flight. Many fans have turned against the man who led Palermo to the top flight after 32 years and turned them into one of the most fascinating stories in Calcio. For Palermo to do a Hellas Verona this season Zamparini needs to make sure of a better atmosphere at the club but as we all know that wonai??i??t be the case. It is useless to think that Zamparini will be craving for stability; the inevitability of uncertainty surrounding the club is in sync with the city they call home. A stable project remains a far-fetched reality while Zamparini remains at the helm.
