Recent reports suggest that Manchester United are close to signing Chelsea FC midfielder Juan Mata. We investigate the various aspects of this purported transfer deal.
Juan Mata was a key squad member for Chelsea ever since he signed on from Valencia for the English giants in 2011. He was the club’s first choice playmaker and capped his first year at the London outfit with a cup-double playing stellar roles in both the FA Cup final and the UEFA Champions League final to help Chelsea lift both these cups. After an even better 2012-13 season, Mata inexplicably finds himself out of favour with new Chelsea coach, Jose Mourinho. In Mourinho’s first season at Chelsea since his return, Mata has fallen down the pecking order with Oscar being the preferred player in the central playmaker role. After making 30+ first team appearances for Chelsea in each of his first two years, the 25 year old Spaniard has only made 13 appearances so far this season with most of them being substitute appearances. Logic fails one to explain how the player who was named Player of the Year for Chelsea two years in a row has suddenly been relegated to the bench. But such are the whimsical ways of one of the most successful managers that have called Stamford Bridge home.
Now, however, reports are emerging that ailing Champions, Manchester United may be interested in signing on the midfielder to boost their campaign and make a bid for at least the top 4 and a Champions League place finish.
Do Manchester United need Mata?
Probably not. Juan Mata is an attacking midfielder whose preferred position is to play off the striker, a typical number 10. That position for United is currently manned by one of their best players (when fit and in form), Wayne Rooney. Rooney is probably the sole reason that Japanese and ex-Borussia Dortmund playmaker, Shinji Kagawa has not been able to secure a starting spot for himself after almost two years at Old Trafford, much to the chagrin of the player and his ex-manager, Juergen Klopp. Ever since the arrival of Arsenal skipper, Robin van Persie, Rooney has moved into a deeper role behind the former. The Englishman is able to get more involved in the build up play this way and has actually been a major force of nature especially this season when all the chips are down. Adding Mata to the mix means United would be faced with the problem of now having two playmakers and nowhere to play them. Probably the only way United may be able to play both Rooney and Mata in the same game would be to move their English star even further back putting him in the CM role, alongside Carrick, from where he can control the game. Robin van Persie up front with Januzaj behind him to the left, Valencia behind him to the right and Mata in the hole could actually work with Rooney controlling the game from a deeper role and providing the long balls to release the three players behind RvP. The obvious pitfall here is that Rooney is, at the end of the day, a striker and his form has dipped in the past when he has stopped scoring goals. Already, he gets fewer shots at goal when he is playing behind the striker(s). Playing in a deeper role would mean more like Paul Scholes’ position for Manchester United with the only chances at goal coming off set pieces or a fortuitous run into the box to land up at the end of an incoming cross.
Wayne Rooney has so far stalled contract negotiations with United as he has about 15 months remaining on his contract. United need to discuss the new position with Rooney and then close out his contract extension because the vultures are already circling in the form of interest from Chelsea as well as several other European clubs like PSG. Rooney is 28 now and probably at his peak as a player. His current season has been a revelation as he has been involved in all parts of the pitch for United. Moving into a deeper midfield role may actually allow him to continue doing that while at the same time increase his playing years. It would be very similar to the positional change implemented by previous United legends like Scholes, Giggs and Keane where they combated the slowing down due to age by playing in a deeper role where they needed to rely less on speed of reflexes that are necessary to score goals and more on experience and speed of thought that allowed them to make that one killer pass that can unlock opposition defences.
In spite of United’s frailties this season especially in midfield, Mata is not exactly the player United need. However, he can be the marquee signing that can lift the entire squad as well as be a signal of intent from Moyes and Manchester United to the football world that Old Trafford is still a destination for world class talent. If Moyes signs Mata, he will need to take the gamble of playing Mata as often as possible. Sir Alex Ferguson often said that there was never any value in the January transfer window. Yet some of his greatest signings including Nemanja Vidic, Patrice Evra and Eric ‘King’ Cantona were January signings. While Vidic and Evra have been faithful servants of the club since the past many years, Cantona was the marquee signing that completely turned around Manchester United’s 1992 season and was one of the key players to make United the Premier League force they are today. Mata has the potential to become Moyes’ very own Eric Cantona but Moyes will have to be brave, braver than he has hitherto been as boss of one of the biggest football clubs in the world.
Can Manchester United sign Mata?
There are three parties to this question actually – Manchester United, the player himself and Chelsea.
Manchester United will have to make a club record breaking bid if they want to land the Spanish international. Most rumours concur on the asking price of Mata’s current club to be in the range of 37 – 40 million pounds. Chelsea had purchased Mata from Valencia for 24 million pounds and the player has only improved in the last two seasons. Hence, the 40 million pound range doesn’t seem that outrageous. It is however for Ed Woodward and the rest of management to decide whether they would be ready to spend 40 million pounds on the player. A part of the deal could be funded by funds received from possible sales of Nani and Young (and possibly Evra over the summer) who could combined net Manchester United something in the range of 30 million pounds. Anderson could also be sold to Fiorentina after his current loan deal elapses at the end of the season.
Juan Mata has not had a very active season with Chelsea and at his age and given the fact that we are in a World Cup year, he would be desperate for more and regular first team action. United may be currently seventh in the league but that doesn’t take away from the reputation and legacy of the club and for all intents and purposes they are still the reigning English champions. If Mata can get involved in the campaign and help the struggling Champions to a fourth place finish and secure the Champions League spot for next season, it could be a major boost for his candidacy for the World Cup to be played in Brazil later this year. Also, Mata would get the opportunity to play with world class players in Rooney and RvP and the proposition of having these three playing together for United is surely a mouthwatering one. There are already rumours circulating that Mata has expressed eagerness to join Manchester United but those rumours are best left untouched for the time being as Mourinho has apparently stated that he will only consider the transfer if the player himself requests to move to Old Trafford though there has been no official statement from either Chelsea or the player or his representatives to this effect.
Which leaves the question of Chelsea’s stance on this transfer.
Will Chelsea sell Mata?
In a fiercely competitive EPL, it is rare that a top club would sell a player to a rival. And yet, Sir Alex Ferguson pulled off a coup of sorts when he signed Arsenal skipper Robin van Persie to Old Trafford last season. The Dutch International propelled United to their 20th English top flight title. This goes to prove that almost any player can be bought if the price is right. Chelsea will not let go off Mata especially to a rival club for cheap but 40 million pounds is by no means pocket change and while Abramovich definitely has deep pockets, a little cushioning for his imminent big ticket summer signings would not hurt. Plus with Mata clearly not figuring into Mourinho’s plans with both Hazard and Oscar favoured over him, the player may not be missed too much at the Bridge.
Competitively too, Chelsea may be forced to think on this transfer. United have played Chelsea twice already in this EPL season. United is already out of the FA Cup and Chelsea are out of the Capital One League Cup so there are no more domestic ties left between the two clubs. The only way the clubs will meet again on the football field this season is if they draw each other in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals or later stages but there are major ifs involved here. Both clubs would first need to win their respective Round of 16 ties and then depend on chance in the draw to be paired together. With United’s current league position, they are unlikely to pose any threat to Chelsea’s title bid this season. However, fortunately for Chelsea, United are yet to play Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal once more in the league. Allowing United to sign Mata may actually help Chelsea’s cause if the reigning Champions can put a road block in the title charges of any or all of these clubs who could easily beat Chelsea to the crown this year.
What could sway Chelsea’s decision against United would be their latent interest in Atletico Madrid forward, Diego Costa. In light of Moyes’ assertion that Wayne Rooney would not be sold, Chelsea would be looking to sign a centre forward come summer and Costa is one of the forwards on their radar. The deal could also involve a swap for Mata, whom Atletico have identified as one of the targets to bolster their current season.
The rumoured transfer surely has Manchester United supporters in particular and EPL followers in general buzzing. With less than 10 days remaining in the winter transfer window, however, the end of this saga, if indeed there is one, may be very near.
