Miroslav Klose rescues a point for Germany against Ghana as he equals Ronaldoai??i??s record at World Cup.
This draw has kept the group wide open with USA and Portugal set to play another crucial game tonight. Ghana will now have to hope for a draw in that game or a Portugal win, but they will still need a very good result against Portugal in their next match.
Germany were expected to win this game comfortably having dispatched Portugal in their opening encounter and the match started according to script with Mario Gotze providing them the lead at the start of the second half. The Bayern Munich midfielder headed in a lovely cross from Thomas Muller down the right. The replay showed that Gotze got a bit lucky as he headed the ball against his own knee and that directed the ball towards goal.
But Ghana came back strongly after conceding that goal and Andre Ayew scored the equalizer just three minutes later. Right back Harrison Afful provided a lovely cross and Ayew leapt above the German defence and scored with a powerful header.
Just nine minutes later Ghana took an unexpected lead as they produced some thrilling football. Sulley Muntari produced a lovely through ball to find Asamoah Gyan and the German defence was caught on the back foot once again. Gyan raced through and produced a wonderful finish past Neur.
Joachim Low brought on Miroslav Klose and Bastian Schweinsteiger after conceding the lead and Klose scored two minutes after coming off the bench. Toni Krossai??i?? corner was met with a well-directed header from Benedikt Howedes and Klose sneaked in at the back post to direct it into the net. This provided the Germans with a crucial point as Klose equalled the record of most number of goals in the World Cup set by Ronaldo.
Klose was delighted after equalling the record, but insisted that it is important for Germany to get a positive result against USA in their next game.
“It’s a pleasure to equal Ronaldo’s record, he is a great striker and person. I hope to play more times and score other goals in this World Cup.
“Twenty (World Cup) matches and 15 goals is not bad at all.
“But what’s important is that we have a good match against the United States (on Thursday).” ai??i?? Klose said after the game.
Joachim Low praised Ghana for their display, but also stressed on this teamai??i??s strong display of character as they fought back after going down to Gyanai??i??s goal.
“Ghana did a good job. They succeeded in closing down space, we weren’t able to get the open spaces.
“It was an incredible high pace and the players gave everything.
“We wanted to avoid a hard fight with these temperatures. The team showed a strong morale to come back after we were down.” ai??i?? Low said.
