The boy who captained Atletico at the age of 19, the man who broke the jinx for Spain by slotting in the winner at Euro 2008 against Germany, the man who enthralled Anfield with his stunning goals. Surely nothing could go wrong for Fernando Torres after his 50 million pound move to Chelsea. But his career has been on a downward spiral ever since that high profile move to Stamford Bridge.

No Liverpool fan or any football fan for that matter, could forget those words by Martin Tyler on a windy afternoon at Old Trafford. Liverpool had demolished United 4-1 at their own turf, thanks to a certain Fernando Torres who proved why he was such a phenomenon and one of the most coveted centre forwards at that time.
Brilliant turn of pace, very strong in the air and lethal in front of goal, Fernando Torres was the classic number 9 who often made the difference between mediocre and spectacular, but sadly El Nino’s powers have waned away ever since the knee operation he had in 2010.
Living in denial?
Form is temporary, class is permanent. This phrase has been a boost to many an athlete who has been suffering form loss of confidence or dip in
form. But it would be absurd to relate the same with Fernando Torres who just hasnai??i??t looked his former self ever since he chose to wear the blue of Chelsea.Ai?? (He has scored just 20 goals in 110 appearances for Chelsea as opposed to the 81 goals in 142 appearances). Many would argue that Torres simply didnai??i??t get used to the ai???systemai??i?? and will never acclimatize to the formation and tactics at Chelsea.
Turn the clock 6 years back and the vital aspect which made Torres devastating was his quick acceleration and turn of pace.Ai?? The Spaniard loved to feature as the lone striker upfront and often played on the shoulder of the last defender. He reaped the rewards of playing alongside Gerrard, Xabi Alonso during his Anfield tenure and the likes of Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso for the Spanish national team, who played to his strengths and this has not been the case at Chelsea. With Chelsea’s approach being slow and their game plan mainly focusing on breaking down the opposition defence gradually, there simply isnai??i??t much space for Torres to exploit with his pace.
Torres has never been comfortable playing alongside another centre forward both at Liverpool and at Chelsea. Rafael Benitez tried a variety of different strikers alongside Torres to create a dual strike force upfront, but that never materialized. Even the high profile capture of Robbie Keane from Tottenham to Liverpool for 19 million pounds didnai??i??t create a promising partnership and that has been the case even at Chelsea. A lot of people expected big things with the Drogba-Torres partnership, when the latter signed for Chelsea, but it was more of a dream rather than a reality.
Best players adapt to different situations but perhaps Torres has been found out due to his one dimensional approach.Ai?? Almost everyone knows that Torres is at his best when racing into the space between centre-halves and full-backs on to balls slid through to him early from midfield.
It is safe to say that Torres has just become another version of Michael Owen, unless something drastic happens this season.Ai?? The hard truth is, Torres’ indifferent form has been going on for quite some now and it is time that he sheds his ego and stops living in denial.
The Way Out
It is pretty tough to predict what goes on in Mourinho`s mind and the Portuguese will surely have a plan on the Spaniard`s role at Chelsea this season, i.e. if he really has a role. With Romelu Lukaku’s permanent move to Everton, Mourinho may be on the lookout for another striker in the transfer market as a back up to Diego Costa and club legend Drogba.
This leaves Torres with an option of moving elsewhere to continue his carrer. A move to Italy is the best way out according to many pundits and fans and Torres should do well in the Italian league which is more technical and he can use that extra yard of pace even though his knee hasnai??i??t been kind to him in the past few years. Another option would be to go back to Spain, where he is still highly valued. But if Torres is not willing to take a pay cut, a move to the MLS might be possible although he wouldnai??i??t do so until he reaches his mid-thirties.
Wolfsburg are reportedly interested to sign Torres and one can only hope that El Nino takes the right decision in moving to the Bundesliga for the better of his career rather than worrying about his salary and slip further down into the abyss at Chelsea.
