We take a look back at the positives for FC Barcelona from the Manchester City clash and the challenges that lies ahead for Gerardo Martino.
The treacherous month of February is on its way out and Barcelona have coped well than previous years. Yes, they have lost the advantage that they once had over Real Madrid and Atletico and have also gone down from the summit after more than a year, but they have had a comprehensive win over Manchester City, in the first leg of the Champions League ai??i?? a win which more or less assures that they will play in the quarter finals of the 2013-14 Champions League.
One loss to Valencia and a draw against Real Sociedad in the Copa Del Rey are the black spots but the team has a clear horizon ahead of them. The return leg against Manchester City should be a tough match, especially with the arrival of Sergio Aguero, but for a Champions League novice to overturn a 2-0 deficit might just seem to be a herculean task. Of course, they can take a cue from what France did against Ukraine in last yearai??i??s World Cup qualification match.
Martino has a lot of positives to take into March. His offensive unit is gelling well and in a matter of days, Messi and Neymar, the brightest stars, will be physically up to the mark. While Leo has made a decent comeback and has started finding the back of the net at regular intervals, Neymar is yet to play a full match, but his progress has been nothing short of outstanding.
In the coming months, Barcelona will have tougher oppositions waiting for them. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, PSG, Chelsea (assuming that all these teamai??i??s progress and so does Barcelona) and they wonai??i??t make it as easy as Pellegriniai??i??s men did.
The addition of Neymar to an already formidable attack may have looked superfluous in the beginning, but in course of time it seems like the young Brazilian may have that extra to unlock the toughest of defences ai??i?? especially against gritty sides like those managed by Jose Mourinho. Most teams have enough personnel to neutralize Messi, but how many of them have enough to nullify both Leo and Neymar ai??i?? that is the question Martino should be asking. It goes without saying that Martino needs to develop his future strategies, keeping in mind the presence of both.
Andres Iniesta looked in sublime form in the last few matches. He plays his football with ridiculous ease and right now he looks like hitting top gear. Martino will want Iniesta to reach his best as the team approaches the business end of the year. Iniestaai??i??s sublime and subtle style also gives Barcelona the advantage and chance of winning set-pieces just outside the box and it has been quite some time that the players have converted clearly from a freekick.
In the match against Manchester City, the Barcelona defense looked solid. However, a large part of that can be attributed to the fact that the English club lacked intent while they attacked. They seemed to have succumbed to the pressure of playing against a top notch side in the knock-out phase of the competition.
While much of the focus was on the penalty awarded to Barcelona against Manchester City, the FIFA rule book clearly states that ai??i??
“If a defender starts holding an attacker outside the penalty area but continues holding inside the penalty area, the referee shall award a penalty kick.”
And most anti-Barca fans cried their heart out on social media, that it wasnai??i??t a penalty, and came up with their shambolic conspiracy theories, they chose to ignore Clichyai??i??s handball inside the penalty box in the early stages of the match and the wrong offside decision against Cesc Fabregas (Nasri played him onside), which lead to a goal by Pique ai??i?? thereby manifesting their double standards and surprisingly, so did the Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

While Pellegrini brought back memories from that match, he was shrewd enough to hide the impotence of his team by saying that referee made amends for not awarding a legitimate penalty to Barcelona then. Ridiculous from a 60-year old veteran.
While the fact remains that quite a few decisions go in favour of Barcelona, a lot more do not. And thanks to the freedom of the social media, and contribution of the anti-Barca contingent, nobody remembers the latter, thereby exposing themselves to be nothing less than hypocrites. Well, thatai??i??s for another day.
The current situation implores Martino to be even more careful. They have all three trophies to play for this season and while his rotational policy has kept the players fresh, he needs to be even more prudent. As for Pellegrini, he should focus more the matches ahead and aim for a more realistic target ai??i?? winning the Premier League. Crying over spilt milk hasnai??i??t ever helped anybody and it wonai??i??t help Pellegrini either.
