FC Barcelona Year End Review – Areas That Require Attention in 2014

2013 was a bittersweet year for FC Barcelona. In the new year, the club however needs to focus on a few things. We discuss the most prominent of those issues.

The incredible win against Getafe last weekend made sure that Barcelona stayed the number 1 team in Spain for an entire year. Martino might be enjoying his well-deserved break, but lest he forgets, the upcoming part will be the biggest test of his managerial career so far.

If you look at the year that just went by, 2013 is by far the most humiliating one for Barcelona, in the recent past. And everything boils down to the mauling at the hands of Bayern Munich.

However, to look at things from a perspective, a few glaring issues need attention. Neymar, to start with!

Neymar ai??i?? What is his actual cost?

Will Barcelona go on to rue Neymar’s arrival?

To give (more) teeth to their offense, the Catalan club chose to sign Brazilian sensation ai??i?? Neymar. However, unlike other signings, Neymarai??i??s acquisition was clouded with a lot of speculation and evidently there was a hint of embezzlement (in absence of a better word).

Jordi Cases, one of Rosellai??i??s main opponents on the board, accused him of “misappropriation of funds” ai??i?? a sum to the tune of ai??i??40 million. Rosell and his deputy, Josep MarAi??a Bartomeu had a confidentiality clause protecting them against making the details of the deal public.

When the flamboyant and profligate Real Madrid president Fiorentino Perez estimated Neymar to be around ai??i??150 million and Barcelona landed him for a measly sum of ai??i??57 million, a faction of the fraternity raised their eyebrows and the others lauded the prudence of the Barcelona board ai??i?? a refreshing change from their usual decadence.

ai???Officially, the ai??i??40 million commission on the transfer went to the player’s father. The signing in the end would possibly have cost no less than ai??i??100 million,ai??? claimed Marca.

Barcelona have reported the transfer fee to be ai??i??57.1 million ai??i?? ai??i??17.1 million went to Santos and ai??i??40 million was paid to the Neymar & Neymar company, jointly owned by the player and his father. There are other payments linked to this deal as well. For instance, ai??i??7.9 million to Santos for preferential rights on three young up-and-coming players ai??i?? Victor Andrade, Gabriel and Giva. There is also a friendly match that Barcelona have to play with Santos. Failure to do so will allow Santos to pocket an extra ai??i??4.5 million. And lastly, if Neymar is one of the top 3 Fifa Ballon dai??i??Or candidates, ai??i??2 million more. All of this adds up to more than ai??i??70 million.

The Sonda group and Barcelona member, Jordi Casas, are now suing the club over the transfer. Depending how the judges rule, Barcelona may have to pay ai??i??142 million for signing the Brazilian, taking into account the sum it has already paid.

The board has sent Neymar’s contracts to Audiencia Nacional judge Pablo Ruz. Now it is up to the court to decide if it will allow Jordi Cases to go ahead with his allegation of undue appropriation of funds against club president Sandro Rosell.

With the way things are proceeding, Neymar may not prove to be a bargain after all! In fact, by the time the season ends, Perez may receive a lot of accolades for landing Gareth Bale at a bargain.

Defense ai??i?? What else?

There is nothing more that can be said or written to emphasize the dire need that Barcelona are in. Itai??i??s appalling as to why Martino chose to put his faith on Puyolai??i??s timely recovery. Now that they have Manchester City, one of the best offenses in Europe, pitched against them, Barcelona must buy a defender who is nothing short of world-class and also not cup-tied at the same time. The first name that you should strike-off from your desired list is that of David Luiz.

If you happen to ponder for a couple of minutes, it is highly likely that you will zero down to two names in particular ai??i?? Jan Vertonghen and Daniel Agger.

Agger (above) should be an easy target, but should not be pursued.

Daniel Agger (29, Liverpool) ai??i?? Not the youngest, but certainly one with a lot of class and experience. Rumours are doing the rounds that Agger is on his way to Napoli, on loan this winter, and a permanent move in the summer for about A?8 million.

Under Brendan Rodgers this season, Agger has largely been on the sidelines and has been deemed surplus to requirements. The Northern Irishman has preferred to use Kolo Toure, Martin Skrtel and Mamadou Sakho at the back.

Recently when Agger led the team against Chelsea, he was slotted at the left back position and despite being a natural left-footed player he struggled in that position. And things went south whenever Eden Hazard came up against him. While Hazard is one of the brightest young talents in Europe, Agger with his years of experience and composure could not stand up to the threat posed by the mercurial Belgian.

Going for Agger at this juncture (when you compare the current state of the Barcelona defense that is) might look like an upgrade, but it will actually be a step backward. Recruiting a shadow of a once world class defender, from a team that is not even playing in Champions League and also seem to be doing well without him isnai??i??t the ideal premise for a club like Barcelona to do business on. And with the prospect of facing the best offense in England, in less than a couple of monthsai??i?? time, Aggerai??i??s unsuitability is only furthered.

Strictly, NO!

Jan Vertonghen (26, Tottenham) ai??i?? Young yet mature. Vertonghen is perhaps everything that Barcelona currently need. He was discontented when former Spursai??i?? boss Villas-Boas played him out of position at left back. While that may not be the concern at Barcelona in the presence of Adriano, Alba and Montoya, the reluctance to play at another position might just be.

Adept in almost every aspect of defending, Vertonghen is currently priced at about ai??i??22 million; moreover his contract runs till June 2016. Ergo Tottenham will not be willing to negotiate and if they have to sell their prized asset, Barcelona will have to shell out a substantial amount in January itself should they choose to harbour any hope of progress in the Champions League against a ruthless Manchester City offense.

His height and aerial prowess will also offer Barcelona some protection against set-pieces ai??i?? an area where they are highly vulnerable.

Other probable candidates, who arenai??i??t cup-tied ai??i?? Aymeric Laporte (19, Athletic Bilbao), Mateo Musacchio (23, Villarreal), Jeremy Mathieu (30, Valencia), Igor Lichnovsky (19, Club Universidad de Chile), Doria (19, Botafogo)

The Catalans however might go for big name during the summer window ai??i?? maybe a Mats Hummels or a David Luiz.

Martino ai??i?? What does the future hold?

Martino deserves a lot more faith from the board

Given that Martino is from a different continent altogether, and this is his first year at one of the top clubs on the planet, the Argentinean manager hasnai??i??t done too badly. In fact, he has exceeded expectations. He maintained normalcy at a club like Barcelona ai??i?? top of the domestic league, SuperCopa Champions, Champions League group toppers and so on.

The intelligent part was that never did he try to project a ai???larger-than-lifeai??i?? image of himself ai??i?? which a few ai???specialai??i?? managers do. Heai??i??s eager to learn and adapt. And he is eager to help.

While defense has been the Achillesai??i?? heel for quite some time now, Martino introduced the young Marc Bartra. The young Masia graduate proved that Barcelona can depend on him, and although he has played an impressive 881 minutes (last year he played just 905 minutes in the entire campaign), many, including the author, believe that Bartra should have played more ai??i?? especially in the Copa del Rey (where he played 90 out of 180 possible minutes) and UEFA Champions League (where he played 101 of the possible 540 minutes).

2013 wasnai??i??t too great for Barcelona and the famous February Fever is about to catch up with the team. Playing Bartra more, at least another 450 minutes, could have had him well prepared to take on the challenge which the team is to face in the latter stages of the continental football championship.

Martino also made another discovery. Apart from injuries, lack of form and a lack of a proper manager, what affected Barcelona was fatigue. Lionel Messi succumbed to an injury and played with it. Andres Iniesta was overexposed and so were many other players. The squad is thin and the team plays at least 50 matches in a matter of about 8 months. More importantly they have been doing this for quite some time now.

Martinoai??i??s rotation policy has seen even Lionel Messi substituted/rested, which was hitherto impossible. Alex Song and Martin Montoya have benefitted from it and so has the rest of the squad. Previously it was difficult for fans to even imagine Sergio Busquets and Alex Song playing together ai??i??Martino has made it possible.

While at Arsenal, Alex Song has given us a glimpse of his offensive streak and he can be decent going up front. Although nowhere in the league of Sergio Busquets or Yaya Toure, Song is a perfect squad player who can easily be slotted in midfield ahead of the defense as a screen.

Recently a faction of the media has come up with reports that the club administration is looking to part ways with Martino, and Scolari and Roberto Martinez are favourites to land the coveted job. While Scolari has been a terrific coach for the Brazilian national team, his success in club football is pedestrian to say the least.

His last stint at a big club is at Chelsea and as most Chelsea managers have their fate destined even before the job, he was handed the pink slip by the maverick Roman Abramovich. Globoesporte insist that Scolari will succeed Martino after the World Cup. Even Spanish journalist, Graham Hunter has spoken of Barcelonaai??i??s dissatisfaction at Martinoai??i??s methods and apparently the club is looking to replace him with the Brazilian World Cup winning coach.

Another candidate is Everton boss Roberto Martinez. Known for his brand of beautiful attacking football, Martinez has proved his mettle with clubs like Swansea, Wigan and now with Everton. Moreover, Martinez has established a conducive relationship with Barcelona after loaning one of their brightest academy stars ai??i?? Gerard Deulofeu. Barcelona apparently see Martinez as a long term solution for the club and his philosophy too is not too out of sync with that of Barcelona ai??i?? attacking football with flair.

If either of the sources are to be believed, then it must be said that Barcelona have lost their mind. It will be trying to fix something which isnai??i??t broken. Martino came in at turbulent times and steadied the ship. The least the club can do is to give him time and support so that he can put method to madness and once again put Barcelona at the pinnacle of success.

Victor Valdes ai??i?? Good luck and thank you for your services

Victor Valdes will be dearly missed

Quite shockingly, Barcelona number one goalkeeper Victor Valdes expressed his desire to move out of the club.

Back to December 2011, when Barcelona travelled to Santiago Bernabeu to take on a belligerent Real Madrid, Valdes was subjected to intense pressure seconds into the game, and quite understandably he miscalculated one of his passes ai??i?? heai??i??s human after all.

A mistimed pass to Eric Abidal was intelligently intercepted by Angel Di Maria ai??i?? one of the quickest Madrid players on the pitch that night and within a matter of seconds, Benzema found the back of the net. Twenty-three seconds into the big night and Jose Mourinhoai??i??s side was given a gift. Well, thatai??i??s when the real Victor Valdes stood up, brushed himself and showed as to why he is the best fit for Barcelona.

Valdes kept doing what he does best. Apart from the initial howler, his distribution was near immaculate. He did not take the easy way out ai??i?? he did not boot the ball but kept playing the way he had learnt his game for about two decades ai??i?? he kept passing and so did Barcelona and eventually they split wide open the resolute Madrid defence and scored three past a hapless Iker Casillas.

ai???The perfect image of this game was that after the goal VAi??ctor ValdAi??s continued playing the ball,ai??? said the then Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola. ai???Real Madrid steam-roller you. Most goalkeepers would boot it. But VAi??ctor kept playing the ball. I prefer us to lose the ball like that but give continuity to our play.ai???

Xavi later added, ai???The key was not forgetting our philosophy. We don’t know how to play any other way ai??i?? and Victor was brave.ai???

Victor was a hero that night and many other nights. Itai??i??s easy for people to remember him for a few mistakes, and not for the stunning performances night after night. His recent performance against Atletico Madrid, in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, bears testimony that Barcelona are in for some torrid time, come next season when he leaves.

Two young keepers who are being touted to be Valdesai??i?? replacement are Marc-AndrAi?? ter Stegen (21, Borussia MAi??nchengladbach) and Thibaut Courtois (21, Chelsea on-loan to Atletico Madrid).

Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinhoai??i??s disdain for Barcelona might just jeopardize their interest in Courtois but the young Belgian is the ideal choice for Barcelona ai??i?? slightly better than Ter Stegen.

Rosell (right) and co will need to tread carefully

The brawny German is perhaps the closest that you get to Oliver Kahn. Not necessarily an heir to the legendary German shotstopper, but Ter Stegen has got what it takes to be the Germany first choice custodian. His maturity is beyond his years and itai??i??s inevitable that he will move to a bigger club.

Courtois is even better. He has been one of the best Atletico players for quite a while and the Zamora trophy last season further manifests the talent of the young Belgian.

Barcelona are at a cusp. They have a system in place which is highly dependent on their youth academy. Even their managers are bred there. While that is a desirable framework, it is imperative for the club to get an outside perspective. And the inclusion of Martino is just the step towards achieving the transition.

The second phase of the current campaign will certainly define a few things for the Catalan club. Martinoai??i??s future, transfer policies, player contracts and a host of other things. Rosell and Co. will have to tread carefully to be in a position of comfort come the business end. Stay tuned for some action-packed months ahead. Barcelona may emerge from the shadows of the last season or they might just get sucked into the internal turbulence.

Heroes rise to the occasion. It is time for Barcelona to do the same.
