A trophy-less season is hardly considered success. Sometimes maybe in terms of progress made in football or growth ai??i?? but here too it cannot be said that there was anything relevant or eventful for FC Barcelona. Wanton events off the pitch, repercussions of some reckless moves derailed the team at opportune moments, which eventually led them to remain without any significant title by the end of the season.
Gerardo Martino resigned no sooner did Barcelona relinquish the domestic title to El Choloai??i??s resurgent Atletico ai??i?? and he is as culpable as the board and the players, if not more.
The Messi Tax Scandal
It all began with the Messi-Tax Fraud case as early as June 2013. The Economic Crime Unit of Barcelona has accused Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, and his father, of tax fraud between 2007 and 2009. There were accusations that his father, also his agent, created shell corporations in various tax havens (Belize and Uruguay predominantly) and transferred his sonai??i??s income from image rights ai??i?? he was also accused of signing deals with other such shell corporations which he owned in UK and Switzerland, to save tax on a sum close to $5.5 million.
Messi earned close to $41.3 million in 2012-13 (till June 2013) – $20.3 million in salary and $21 million in endorsements. The crisis inflicted Spanish tax authorities smelled blood at the prospect of losing their income and the former Ballon dai??i??Or and his father were hounded like never before.
According to the prosecution, all this began way back in 2005, when Lionel Messi was still just 17 ai??i?? a minor.
Lionel Messiai??i??s image rights included contracts with some of the biggest names in the corporate world – Banco Sabadell, EA Sports, Audemars Piguet, Adidas, Pepsico, Danone, the Kuwait Food Company and Proctor & Gamble.
Broadcasting, match day revenues and commercial are the pillars of any football teamai??i??s business model and any retribution to Messi would have severely dented Barcelonaai??i??s chances in various tournaments and subsequently their revenue.
In September 2013, Jorge and Lionel Messi made a payment of $6.85 million to the Spanish tax authorities ai??i?? the money that they reportedly owed – $5.48 million in back taxes for 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the rest in interest earned on that amount.
The biggest star of the team faced intense 3 months just before the onset of the season. And that was bound to hit the teamai??i??s morale. It did!
Appalling Transfers
Barcelona transfers are as appalling as they get ai??i?? season after season. The board is solely to be blamed for this and Sandro Rosell & Andoni Zubizarreta in particular should be singled out for the demise of the mighty Catalan club.
The fact that duo prioritised the signing of Neymar ahead of a defender perhaps manifests callousness (of Andoni Zubizarreta) and opportunism (of Sandro Rosell) at the expense of Brand Barcelona.
Gerard Pique, Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano have all been exposed to ever-incisive offenses across Europe for the past few seasons ai??i?? so much so that teams know exactly what needs to be done against them.
For this board it was more of a matter of ego than need. The signing of Fabregas in 2011 is yet another instance. Make no mistake ai??i?? Fabregas is a world class talent, and is right up there with the other top midfielders of his generation. Nevertheless, at Barcelona, he was brought as a future replacement for Xavi and today he doesnai??i??t have a fixed role in the squad. It is not his fault but that of the manager and the board.
Over the years, a host of top defensive talents have been linked with Barcelona ai??i?? Thiago Silva, Jan Vertonghen, Inigo Martinez, Gary Cahill, Marquinhos, Mats Hummels, Jeremy Mathieu, et al. They have all been overlooked, despite the humiliating 7-0 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich last season.
Moreover the appointment of Martino was as baffling as it gets. Barcelona were at a cusp and at the juncture a man with zero experience in European arena was recruited to deliver the goods. Martino failed, but he is not to be blamed. At least not solely.
The board needs to put results before style and stop interfering in matters on the pitch. As long as they do not insulate themselves from the proceedings on the pitch, there isnai??i??t going to be too much improvement.
Tata Martino
It will be extremely unfair to blame Martino entirely. One must not forget that Martino gave the team a remarkable start and was close to giving them an alternative route (read Plan B) to reach their destination (read win matches). But 51-year-old has never been that popular with the Barcelona fans or press and his attempts to evolve the teamai??i??s style of play ai??i?? and after the winter break, he seemed to have had enough and his shoulders drooped.
What Martino could have done differently was to dig deep into the clubai??i??s youth academy ai??i?? with the exception Marc Bartra, no other youth player was given a fair number of minutes. And even Bartra got those chances because he was only recognised defender when either of Pique or Mascherano was unavailable. In fact, it was surprising that he did not even name enough La Masia players in the squad.
Including youngsters in the senior is more of a way to prepare them mentally than anything else. These youngsters harbour of donning the jersey for the senior team in future and rubbing shoulders with their icons in the dressing room can do them a world of good.
Yet Another Scandal – This Time Neymar
As if one scandal wasnai??i??t enough, Barcelona had yet another hit them midway into the season. After superstar Lionel Messi, it was Brazilian prodigy Neymar.
Ranked #8 by Forbes in 2013 in terms of earnings, Neymar is perhaps the biggest superstar in his age group. At a young age of 22, he has some of the biggest endorsement deals which comprises some top of the shelf corporate names, a la, Nike, Panasonic, Volkswagen, Unilever, Claro, Guarana Antarctica, Santandar, et al.
While the young forward was expected to join Barcelona after the 2014 World Cup, Rosell and Co. expedited the process and signed him as early as May 2013. And therein lied the trap.
For the purpose of branding and marketing the duo of Messi and Neymar are the dreams of marketers around the globe. So much so that they were even called ai???Nemesisai??i??. However, on the pitch they were far from it.
Like most deals involving South American players this too was complex. The Catalan club was accused of ai???financial engineeringai??i?? (more crudely called ai??i?? fraud in transaction) to save on taxes. Payments were reportedly made to a Brazilian company (N&N) which was controlled by Neymarai??i??s father and a part of the payment was disguised as other payments to avoid taxes.
For Neymar, Barcelona paid about $118.2 million to Santos and others. The identities of these ai???otherai??i?? parties were unclear and a chunk of those was pocketed by Neymarai??i??s father as commission and for personal services ai??i?? the payment made to Santos was considerably less.
Senior Neymar came under a lot of scrutiny and Delcir Sonda, owner of a third party investor DIS did not hold back his opinion.
ai???Iai??i??m disgusted by all the sh*t that fell to my company. Neymarai??i??s father is a person of very low level. He was in poverty and do not appreciate people who helped his son,ai??? said Sonda.
Sandro Rosell had to resign (good riddance!) after Barcelona had to make the documents related to the deal public.
However, the eventual verdict was pleasing to the new President ai??i?? Josep Maria Bartomeu. The Committee for Economic Control of the LFP came to the conclusion that Barcelona did not ai???infringe LFP rulesai???.
Barcelona however, had to pay exactly ai??i??13,550,830.56 (roughly $18.6 million) to Spanish tax authorities to resolve outstanding issues related to.
Lionel Messi is perhaps the most celebrated South American footballer right now. And every budding youngster from that region aspires to be him or like him. Neymar is not exception.
Ironically, perhaps he went a bit too far. After the iconic Argentine father-son duo, their Brazilian counterpart brought upon themselves a similar calamity. One can only hope that in his quest for Messi-ism, Neymar also gets to be the player that Lionel Messi is, on the pitch.
The Aberration
While Barcelona scored 100 goals and conceded just 33 over a span of 38 matches, they lost some crucial matches and at crucial junctures. Of the 87 points, they gathered 50 in the first round and just 37 in the second. Real Madrid also on 87, scored 47 in the first round and 40 in the second. Eventual champions Atletico Madrid, scored 90, and fetched 50 in the first round and 40 in the second. While all three lost intensity and momentum Barcelonaai??i??s dropped the most ai??i?? 26% (Atletico 20%, Real Madrid 15%). While a lot can be said about some of Martinoai??i??s bizarre tactics in the latter half of the season, truth be told, injuries too played a huge role.
When Atletico had Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid had Iker Casillas and Diego Lopez, Barcelona just had Jose Pinto. You can see the drop in quality there.
The home loss against Valencia in the 22nd round at Camp Nou led Barcelona to relinquish the top spot after more than a year. They regained that in round 23 and 24, but the away loss again, at San Sebastian (home of Real Sociedad), took them to the second position again.
Martinoai??i??s men could not get back up on their feet after that slip and subsequent loses against Valladolid and Granada made it even more difficult to recover. And even then they drew against Getafe and Elche!
Barcelona surrendered their domestic crown even before the last round of the season.
Injuries
While many may argue that injuries are part and parcel of the game and every team faces their share of bad luck at some point or the other, it boils down to Barcelonaai??i??s poor planning of their transfers.
While the team is well stocked in the offensive defensive, they are as depleted in the defensive region. As analysed by Ben Hayward, Barcelona score at an average of 32 minutes with or without Messi. And same can be said about Neymar, who was anyway having his debut season in Europe.
Carles Puyol was never fit enough to last an entire season. In his absence the only recognised centre-back pairing was that of Bartra and Pique. Mascherano may have been good in patches, but the fact remains that he lacks certain abilities inherent in a centre-back. Barcelonaai??i??s propensity to buy players to fit in multiple roles have not been successful in the recent past. But they do it anyway.
While Puyol was out for almost the entire season, barring a few appearances here and there, Pique too succumbed to a serious hip injury, leaving the defense only too vulnerable.
However, one instance which really crippled Barcelonaai??i??s title challenges on all fronts was the unfortunate injury to outgoing keeper Victor Valdes. A tear in the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during BarAi??a’s 3-0 win over Celta Vigo on 26 March after landing awkwardly while saving a free-kick, spelled the end of Valdesai??i?? tenure at Barcelona. A rather unfortunate one.
And with all due respect to Pinto, you cannot expect to go out and compete at the highest level with him in charge.
If that is the case, then why did Andoni Zubizarreta (despite being a goalkeeper himself) not sign Ter Stegen last summer and have him as an understudy to Valdes? This is something which we will never know.
Luis Enrique
Enough of rants on the previous season ai??i?? it is time to look forward now. Luis Enrique, one of the few Barcelona favourites, despite playing for Real Madrid is in charge now. And if his recent press conference is anything to go by, then the future looks bright.
Luis Enrisue: “Being a coach is more than putting together a line-up. It’s managing a group, players’ personalities, motivating them…”

Fans can only hope that the board learns from its mistakes and makes amends.
