With only the playoffs remaining, it is safe to say this season of the Eredivisie is over. Full of rollercoaster rides, the competitiveness and unpredictability of the Eredivisie continues to amaze. With a largely unspectacular squad lacking in the creativity of Eriksen and the solid leadership of Alderweireld at the back, Ajax somehow retained their title – their 4th consecutive title – , pulling off an excellent second half of the season – unbeaten since the start of November, when a late Qazaishvili goal gave Vitesse 3 points at the Amsterdam ArenA and pulling off vital wins vs title contenders Twente and Feyenoord.
Feyenoord themselves had a terrible start to the season, picking up only 2 wins in their first 6 matches, but with great management from Ronald Koeman, they eventually climbed up to 2nd in the table, only 4 points behind Ajax, even though their season was marred by controversy for soon-stripped-of-captaincy captain Pelle. PSV made a similar sort of a phoenix-like comeback, from languishing in 6th and 7th for most of the season to going on a winning streak towards the end of the season and mustering a 4th placed finish, inside the European places. The biggest disappointment though, came for Vitesse who led the table and were looking to finally break the monopoly of Ajax, but endured a horrible turn of form after the Christmas break, coinciding with drops in form for most of their top performers like Piazon and Propper. They finished 6th, two points behind Finnbogason-powered Heerenveen.
There have been quite a few brilliant performers this season in the Eredivisie, which lost the likes of Kevin Strootman, Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld last summer. But as the Eredivisie has proved, when one diamond is extracted, there is another, slightly rough around the edges, covered in mud, waiting to be uncovered. Here is TheHardTackle’s Eredivisie Team of the Season for 2013/14.
GOALKEEPER: JASPER CILLESSEN (25) – AJAX
Jeroen Zoet has had a great season back at PSV, and Robbin Ruiter continues to attract interest from various foreign clubs but it is the man who was Ajax no. 2 at the beginning of the season that takes the No. 1 spot in our first XI. After a string of terrible performances from Kenneth Vermeer, Frank de Boer decided that enough was enough and gave the almost-unnaturally-blonde Cillessen a shot at being the first choice keeper, Cillessen grabbed it with both his gloved hands and never looked back. Fitting Ajax’s bill of a sweeper-keeper, Cillessen has been calm in possession, calm in distribution and calm in dealing with one-on-one situations, when his defence fails him. Calm, in contrast to the crazy season he’s had, going from getting minutes only in Cup games to most likely being Louis van Gaal’s No. 1 in Brazil this summer.
RIGHT CENTREBACK: JOEL VELTMAN (22) – AJAX
The Ajax team this season is not as fruitful in attack as it was last season, missing the service of Christian Eriksen, and losing captain Siem de Jong to consistent injuries throughout the season. Hoesen was sent on loan in a peculiar decision, Sigthorsson missed quite a chunk of the season and Bojan simply was not good enough to deliver regularly. Hence, their strength has stemmed from the fact that they do not concede a lot. In a league that inflates and balloons attacking stats, where even the relegation battlers play an open game based on possession and passing, good defending is key. Veltman’s career so far had been marred by untimely injuries and in pre-season, it looked like 3.5million acquisition Mike van der Hoorn would take over the mantle from Toby Alderweireld. However, the Utrecht man failed horribly and it was actually, Veltman – an academy graduate of Ajax – who has cemented his place alongside Niklas Moisander. His playing style akin to Jan Vertonghen, Veltman, or ‘veldheer’ as de Boer calls him, Veltman is still slightly error prone when left to deal with attackers on his own but more often than not, has kept things steady at the back while being perhaps the most adventurous centreback in the league, threading his way through the opposition box often.
CENTREBACK/SWEEPER: GURAM KASHIA (26) – VITESSE
In a campaign that promised so much for Vitesse and yielded much much less than what they aimed for, one only wonders how farther they could have been had they not Guram Kashia. A brilliant air of leadership about him, he helped to steady the boat when things got rocky for Vitesse. Resilient, strong, dependable and dominant, Kashia has easily been one of the best defenders in the league this season.
LEFT CENTREBACK: NIKLAS MOISANDER (28) – AJAX
The other half of Ajax’s dependable central duo, Moisander spent quite some time on the sidelines because of a persistent knee problem but still makes the cut when considering the best defenders. Having inexperienced partners in Joel Veltman and Stefano Denswil, Moisander has had to offer the calmness at the back and has done so. Linked with Everton earlier this season for 3.5 million pounds – much less than what he should be worth – Moisander looks to be off in the summer, but acting as captain in the long absence of Siem de Jong and providing cross-field balls to his wingers that Frank de Boer would be proud off, Moisander’s apparent last season in Amsterdam has been excellent.
DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD: DALEY BLIND (24) – AJAX
The Eredivisie team of the season would surely not be complete without the Eredivisie Player of the Year. After trying and failing to fully re-convert Blind into a no. 6 controller due to injuries to Boilesen, Frank de Boer finally completed his transition this season. He filled in for Boilesen at leftback on a few occassions but spent the majority in his natural No. 6 position and has excelled. Only three seasons back, Blind was booed off at the ArenA and this season, received a roaring ovation when the team celebrated at the ArenA Park. His growth has been fantastic, into a leader in the Ajax team, holding the team together and setting its rhythm. Having also said that he’d be open to spending his entire career at Ajax, Blind has well and truly become a fan favorite now and putting in shifts his father would be proud of.
DEFENSIVE MIDFIELD: JORDY CLASIE (22) – FEYENOORD
Taking over captaincy from the maligned Pelle in recent weeks, Clasie has turned his season around in the second half, playing an integral role in Feyenoord’s revival. Nicknames like ‘Dutch Xavi’ have been around since last season, and are still slightly premature but Clasie seems well on way to fulfilling it. Always a player who looks like he genuinely cares and gives his all on field, with a great variety of passing under his belt, Clasie has been a standout performer.
RIGHT WING: LASSE SCHONE (27) – AJAX
Ajax’s Player of the Season has been their most consistent performer across all competitions. Bought on a free transfer from NEC, Schone was used deep in midfield before being deployed as a ‘make-shift’ right winger in the absence of Bojan due to injury and has had a blistering season since. Ajax’s Mr Consistent, Schone has been the man to go to in the big matches for Ajax. Scoring 14 times all season and assisting 10, his tally includes two goals against Celtic in Europe, a well-taken hattrick vs Heerenveen, a goal and assist vs Twente, a brilliant assist for Sigthorsson vs PSV and a fabulous freekick vs Heracles which assured Ajax of the title.
ATTACKING MIDFIELD: DUSAN TADIC (25) – FC TWENTE
Statistically, Tadic has had the season of his life so far – scoring 16 times and assisting a further 14 times. Considering the attacking trio of Tadic, Castaignos and Promes, it is not surprising Twente finished the second highest scorers in the Eredivisie, with 72 goals. The fact that Tadic was involved in almost 50% of them highlights the centrality of Tadic’s figure to this Twente side, that came so close but could only get so far.
LEFT WING: MEMPHIS DEPAY (20) – PSV
It seems destined that the best of PSV’s players play on the left wing. Dries Mertens last season, with the form of his life, blocked the way for young Memphis Depay but his departure to Napoli meant that Depay could now fully establish him in Philip Cocu’s young side. Depay’s season with PSV can easily be mirrored by Eden Hazard’s with Chelsea, with most of PSV’s attacks coming in the form of the young trickster on the left wing, who loves to cut in and toy with defenders. The more frustrating aspect of Depay is that he tends to hold on to the ball too long and goes for personal glory – a flaw that is being alleviated recently. He definitely has broken through in what was touted to be his breakthrough season and Depay can look to even secure a starting place in van Gaal’s side in Brazil.
STRIKER: ALFRED FINNBOGASON (25) – HEERENVEEN
Just having the title of the Eredivise top scorer does not justify the menace Finnbogason has provided defenders with this season. The Icelandic striker has never failed to score in more than 2 consecutive games this season and is a huge factor in Heerenveen’s 5th place finish above Vitesse and just two points off 4th placed PSV. He will no doubt be in the books of many clubs in the summer and with Ziyech looking likely to move too, Heerenveen could suffer next season.

MANAGER: FRANK DE BOER – AJAX
This season has not been the best that Ajax have had under Frank de Boer in his 4 title-winning seasons but it has been the one in which they have quietly gone about their job, having to grind out results. The manager could have certainly done better in certain situations when his team were figured out, but for the most part, dealing with the loss of his main creative exponent over the last 3 seasons – Eriksen -, losing his captain to long term injuries and turning to the Academy to set up a youthful core of players who have proved themselves this season would not be termed as a failure. Johan Cruijff has recently voiced out that he’d like for de Boer to stay at Ajax and the 43-year-old himself has said earlier that he wants to stay at Ajax for 8-10 years though with the looming interest from Tottenham, he has admitted he will consider concrete offers. Cruijff went to lengths to get de Boer instated in the job and with no natural successor available, Ajax will be hoping the recently-announced Manager of the Year does not find the grass greener in North London.
