Arsenal jumped back to the top, Manchester City had to work hard against Newcastle and Manchester United get back to winning ways. We review the 21st gameweek of the English Premier League.
We go around the grounds in the Premier League and look at the results affecting both the title and the relegation fight. This continues to be one of the closest seasons yet with no frontrunner emerging yet. Gameweek 21 continued the trend with all the top 4 teams winning thus maintaining the slender gap in between them.
Arsenal cruise to victory at Villa Park
The Gunners traveled to Birmingham to take on a Villa side who aren’t exactly setting the Premier League alight. They have won just one match at home so far in the season. However, like almost all teams in the bottom half of the table, they could be expected to spring a surprise at home against the big teams. However, in the end Arsenal proved to be too much for the Villans this time around. A late goal by Christian Benteke – ending his 11 match goalless streak – could not inspire Villa to go on and push for a point or maybe even three. Two first half goals separated by just 59 seconds from Wilshere and Giroud meant that The Gunners went into the break sensing a comfortable win on the night. The second half saw a drop in tempo but ultimately Arsenal did enough to register a comfortable win against Paul Lambert’s men.
This win means that Arsenal continue to lead the Premier League albeit by a slender point. Arsene Wenger stated Arsenal’s desire to win the Premier League in his post match conference. With performances like these, they sure look the real deal this season.
Manchester City made to work hard by stubborn Newcastle
Expected to be one of the fixtures of the weekend, this match at St. James’ Park turned out to be anything but. Manchester City came into this fixture on the back of 5 league wins in a row. As expected, City were quick out of the blocks starting the game at a high intensity.
This sustained pressure from City resulted in an 8th minute goal from Edin Dzeko who slotted in a neatly crossed ball by Kolarov from the left. The team from Manchester continued to pile up the pressure, but the Magpies eventually found their foothold in the game managing some strikes on goal. The controversial moment of the match came when Tiote thought he had scored a screamer from 20 yards out, the goal was however ruled out by the referee for offside. Joe Hart was considerably busier in the second half with Cabaye’s shot coming close to finding the back of the net. City sealed the points in stoppage time of the second half after a goal from Negredo. It was the Spaniard’s fifth goal in his last three.
Manchester City are starting to emerge as the pundit’s favourites to win the Premier League for the second time in three years owing to the ruthlessness by which they sweep teams away at home and their ever improving away form. Newcastle, on the other hand slumped to their second defeat in as many games. They, however look to be safely settling into a mid-table berth.
Manchester United break winless streak with a win against Swansea
Swansea couldn’t have come to Old Trafford at a better time. Manchester United had lost their last 2 home games and were possibly in the worst frame of mind they have been for years. Added to that, the team from Wales had knocked United out of the FA Cup just days ago thanks to a brilliant performance and a mediocre United display.
The first half was going with the recent trend – United seemed to be on the back foot all the time with the Swans conjuring attack after attack. The crowd at OT grew restless with every Man Utd attack ending before it began. Swansea, however, would rue the fact that they could not convert all the possession into a goal as United came out determined in the second half. Moyes made a slight technical change for the second period with Kagawa playing in the hole behind the striker while Januzaj moved to the left. This move had an immediate impact as a Valencia goal at the start of the second half had the Old Trafford crowd breathe a huge sigh of relief. Danny Welbeck sealed the points late in the second half after he finished a through ball from the impressive Kagawa.
United moved to four points behind Everton in the Premier League table who are in fifth place. While Swansea moved dangerously close to the relegation zone in 13th place and only 3 points away. United must be relieved that they finally secured three points – their first in 2014. However, a more convincing performance would be needed to convince the Reds faithful and critics alike that they are genuine title contenders this season.
Liverpool win a pulsating encounter against Stoke City
Perhaps the game of the Premier League weekend was played out at the Britannia stadium with Liverpool winning an eight-goal thriller in the end thanks to the sublime Luis Suarez and the returning Daniel Sturridge.
Liverpool looked to be cruising early in the second half when they raced to a two goal lead thanks to an own goal from Shawcross and an opportunistic strike from Suarez. However, Stoke pulled back the deficit with strikes from Crouch and Adam late in the first half. Steven Gerrard put Liverpool back in front with a controversial penalty awarded by referee Anthony Taylor. A Suarez goal few minutes later assisted by the impressive Sturridge seemed to have sealed the points for Liverpool, but a Walters goal made thing interesting. At 4-3, Sturridge scored to secure the points for Liverpool and bring an end to a tasty encounter and a fantastic advert for the Premier League.
Liverpool hold on to the fourth spot – four points behind Chelsea and just a point ahead of their Merseyside rivals Everton. Stoke, in the meanwhile, drifted to just 4 points away from the relegation zone.
Around the grounds
Chelsea were made to work hard against Hull City at the KC Stadium. However, two second half goals sealed the points for The Blues. Petr Cech kept a club record 209th clean sheet overtaking club legend Peter Bonetti.
Tottenham were also made to sweat as two second half goals by Eriksen and the departing Jermain Defoe helped ease the pressure on Tim Sherwood. Palace remain rooted to the bottom of the table with an escape from relegation looking more and more difficult every week.
Everton put on an impressive display against Norwich at Goodison Park winning the game comfortably 2-0. At St. Mary’s, Southampton also continued to impress everyone with a clinical performance against West Brom. A first half goal from Adam Lallana sealed the three points for the Saints.
Meanwhile, the pressure on Sam Allardyce was eased a little as West Ham ran out 2-0 winners against Cardiff City. The big boost for Big Sam would have been the return of Andy Carroll who had been absent for a long time with an injury.
That rounds up the results in the Premier League. This season looks to be one of the closest in terms of the title fight and as is usually the case, the relegation fight also seems to be intensifying. With the top 6 teams all winning this weekend, the race is certainly headed for a tight finish with just 17 weeks left to finish the season.
